Legions (Abyss Universe) - Quick Rules Summary

Legions is a tactical 2-player card game set in the Abyss universe. Players compete for the throne by deploying legions to districts, recruiting heroes, and securing majorities.

Game Objective

The game ends immediately when a player controls 5 Banners. Otherwise, the player with the most Victory Points (VP) wins once the decks or heroes are exhausted.

Quick Setup

  • Place the Battlefield board with 5 districts between the players.
  • Set the 5 Majority tokens on their neutral spaces.
  • Display 5 Hero cards face-up.
  • Create a Legion row of 3 cards (2 face-up, 1 face-down). Each player starts with 3 Legion cards in hand.

Gameplay

The game is played over several rounds, each consisting of three phases:

1. Initiative (Determining the Lead)

  • Both players simultaneously choose one Legion card from their hand and reveal it.
  • The player with the lowest number on their card takes the lead (becomes the 1st Player). In case of a tie, guild priority symbols decide.

2. Player Turns

Actions of the 1st Player:

  1. Place Legion: Place the card used for initiative in the matching color district on your side of the battlefield. (White Ambassador cards are wilds for any district).
  2. Recruit Hero (Optional): If you meet the guild icon requirements on your cards in the current district, take a matching Hero from the display. Apply their power immediately if applicable.
  3. Draw Card: Choose 1 of the 3 Legion cards from the row and refill your hand. Refill the row from the deck.

Actions of the 2nd Player:

  1. Place Legion: Same as the 1st player (place your card in the matching district).
  2. Recruit Hero (Optional): Same as the 1st player.
  3. Attack & Draw: Choose 1 of the remaining 2 Legion cards from the row. Then, you may undermine the opponent's morale (Attack): You may flip one of the opponent's cards in the district where you just played to its "routed" side (it no longer counts towards majority).

3. End of Round: Majorities & Rewards

After both players have finished their turns, evaluate the districts:

  • In each district, check which player has the highest total influence (sum of numbers on face-up cards).
  • The winner takes the Majority token for that district.
  • If you already hold the token and win the majority again, you trigger the District Effect (e.g., gain a Banner, VP, or a Stratagem).

Cards & Symbols

Legion Cards

  • Number: Determines initiative and influence in the district.
  • Color (Guild): Determines which district the card must be placed in (Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Purple).
  • Icons: Required to recruit Heroes.
  • Reward (Bottom): Immediate VP or Banners when played (if shown).

Hero Cards

  • Provide permanent advantages, strong one-time effects, or end-game VP.
  • Recruited by matching specific guild symbols in a district.

Symbols & Categories

  • Banners: Direct victory condition (collect 5).
  • Pearls / VP: Victory points for final scoring.
  • Stratagems: One-time use tokens with special game-changing effects.
  • Routed Units: Cards flipped due to an attack. They lose their influence value but can sometimes be "rallied" or re-used via effects.

End of Game

The game ends:

  1. Immediately if a player gains their 5th Banner.
  2. When the Legion deck is empty or no more Heroes can be recruited. In this case, the player with the most total points from cards, heroes, and banners wins.
