Game Overview

In Pandemain, we run medieval bakeries. Success depends on an efficient production chain: buying raw materials, refining them (flour/dough), baking, and selling for profit, all while keeping the Inquisition satisfied.

Core Concept: Resources & Quality

There are three types of grain that determine the bread's value:

  • Rye (Brown): Cheap, provides low prestige.
  • Wheat (Yellow): Mid-tier, solid income.
  • Spelt (White): Expensive, provides the highest glory.
  • Important: You must have flour of the specific quality to bake the corresponding bread. Mixing flour qualities is not allowed!

Gameplay

A day (round) consists of four phases:

1. Preparation Phase

  • Draw an Event card (often modifies prices or action costs).
  • Replenish the market with grain and artisan cards (Day Laborers).

2. Action Phase (Worker Placement)

Players take turns placing their apprentices (workers) at various locations:

  • Marketplace: Buy grain. Prices often rise as more players purchase from the same spot.
  • Mill: Exchange grain tiles for flour tiles of the matching type.
  • Bakery: Process flour into dough. This is a prerequisite for using the oven.
  • Communal Oven: Bake bread. Costs 1 Wood (regardless of the amount of bread baked).
  • Church: Donate bread to increase religious influence (protection from the Inquisition).

3. Selling Phase

  • Districts: Sell bread for Victory Points (Prestige) or Money (Silver).
  • Contracts: Fulfill public contracts for bonus prestige and immediate rewards.

4. Maintenance Phase (Evening)

  • Wages: Pay Silver for each worker used. Failure to pay results in a heavy loss of Prestige.
  • Spoilage: Dough (unbaked) must be discarded. Flour and grain do not spoil.

Strategic Nuances

Element Effect & Tip
Inquisition Occurs on specific days. The player with the lowest Church influence suffers heavy penalties in Prestige or resources.
Master Token The first player to reach a certain prestige threshold becomes a "Master," gaining permanent discounts or bonuses during baking.
Day Laborers Cards providing one-time bonuses (e.g., free wood) or permanent perks (e.g., lower wages). Essential for winning.

Game End & Scoring

After the final day (usually 5 or 6), final scoring takes place:

  • Current position on the Prestige track.
  • Points for fulfilled long-term objectives (contracts).
  • Conversion: Every 5 Silver or 3 high-quality resources (Spelt/Wheat) grants 1 additional point.
