Tricky Kids

In this trick-taking game for 2-6 players, players take on the roles of children on a playground trading toys and snacks. Since they don't know the actual value of their items, they write the numbers on their cards themselves, aiming to collect the most point tokens.

Gameplay

The game is played over 3 rounds, each consisting of 7 tricks.

  • Setup: At the start of each round, 7 point tokens are revealed which denote how many points each trick will be worth, depending on the suit that won that trick. Players draw 9 cards each into their hand and choose 7 to keep, discarding the remaining 2 cards.
  • Write Numbers: Players choose the value of each card and write the value on the card. Each card can have a value between 0 and 21, with the sum across the 7 cards equalling 21.
  • Tricky Rules: A rule card is revealed, setting a special condition for the round (e.g., value restrictions or passing rules).
  • Playing Tricks: Players must follow suit. If you have a card of the led suit, you must play it.
    • Leading: The lead player plays any card from their hand.
    • Winning a Trick: The highest-ranked card of the led suit wins the trick. If playing with trump rules, the highest trump card wins. Zero (0) value cards cannot win a trick. If 2 or more players play the highest value card then they cancel each other out and the next highest value wins the trick.
    • Reward: The winner of the trick takes the leftmost point token, earning the points noted on the point token associated with the suit played, and leads the next trick. If there is no winner of the trick then the leftmost point token is removed from the round.

End of Game & Scoring

A round ends after 7 tricks. All cards are erased and redistributed for the next round.

  • Winner: After 3 rounds, the player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the player who played the highest-valued card in a trick during the final round wins.

Variants & Options

  • Trump Rules: One suit can be designated as trump, outranking all other suits.
  • Double Dutch: An advanced variant where two Tricky Rules are active simultaneously.
