Line 1: Line 1:
These are some unofficial tips on how to make wiki rules pages display in a readable way on the BGA site beneath a game, with some notes on elements which do not work as expected, and useful elements which don't appear to be documented anywhere. Many tags and methods of formatting are completely stripped out by the BGA website when displaying wiki ruleset, but there are some workarounds. Note also that some elements display differently depending on whether you're reading the rules at the bottom of a live game page, or on the game's "about" page.

==Languages==

Wiki page content displays:
# User's '''[https://boardgamearena.com/preferences?section=lang language]''', else
# English, else
# ''Create this page'' link/button.

e.g. A Chinese user reads the Jump Drive rules summary on its game panel page, ''displayed in English'' ('''en'''.doc.boardgamearena.com/Gamehelpjumpdrive) because the Chinese ('''zh'''.doc.boardgamearena.com/Gamehelpjumpdrive) page does not exist.
The user sees a typo in the English rules  and selects the ''edit page'' link to correct it, but the Chinese wiki's ''create page'' is displayed instead.

====Bug reports====

* '''[https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=102754 Link for editing is misleading]'''

The <code><nowiki><blockquote></nowiki></code> tag displays a block of text indented with a grey margin, on the wiki. It displays as a completely regular and unindented paragraph on the BGA view.
* '''[https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=117297 Templates and some format don't work in other language]'''

==Bullet points==
==Lists==

The BGA rules display strips all bullet points, if the regular wiki bullet markup of asterisks is used.
'''[https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Lists Help:Lists]'''

A common solution seems to be to add bullet-point unicode symbols, or hyphens. This also requires lines to be separated by paragraph breaks or <nowiki><br/></nowiki> tags, or to be used in addition to asterisked bullet points, otherwise all the points appear on the same line.

1. A

When viewed during a game: A level two heading ("==") will appear with a box around it on the BGA view, and be uppercased. A level three heading ("===") is formatted identically and is indistinguishable from a level two heading, except that it slightly overlaps the text above it. A level four heading ("====") is displayed within the box of the level three heading, and bolded. Level five headings are displayed as regular unbolded text.
2. B

For example, if a game has a level two heading of "End of game scoring", with four level three headings for the different scoring categories, the final of these ("Scientific structures") containing a level four heading "Sets of identical symbols", it will look like this:
3. C

2. B

When viewed on a game's about page, all such rules appear in a single box, with level two through four headings both being bold fonts in their original cases. Level two headings are slightly larger than the other two.
3. C

People seem to be independently realising this and writing rules using a level two heading ("==") for each section, and a level four heading ("====") for its subheadings, skipping level three entirely. I've also seen rule writers add extra blank lines to the ends of each section (eg. at [[Gamehelpturingmachine]]), which may be to avoid the headings overlapping the text.

Some game rules, including [[Gamehelpjumpdrive]] and [[Gamehelpspacestationphoenix]], use keywords such as [METAL] and [PLANET].
'''A term''': A detail

When a player reads these rules during a BGA game, these tags get converted into icons. When the player reads the rules on the game panel page or the wiki, they remain as text.
'''B term''': B detail

This feature seems to be undocumented, and [https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=121439#p121439 has been confirmed] as a custom option that a developer can choose to create for a game.
'''C term''': C detail

==Images==

'''[[Special:Upload|Upload an image]]'''
'''A term''': A detail

Attempting to specify an image size in image markup (eg. <code><nowiki>[[File:Marrakech example.jpg|300px]]</nowiki></code>) will work in the wiki view, but will cause the image to appear blank in the BGA view (as it tries to display a resized image which does not exist in the directory it's referencing).
'''B term''': B detail

A solution is to display images at the default size (meaning that they must also be uploaded at the size you want them to appear), eg:
'''C term''': C detail

<pre>[[File:Marrakech example.jpg]]</pre>
{{!}}<p style="margin:8px 0;padding:0;line-height:normal;"><b>A term</b>: A detail</p>
<p style="margin:8px 0;padding:0;line-height:normal;"><b>B term</b>: B detail</p>
<p style="margin:8px 0;padding:0;line-height:normal;"><b>C term</b>: C detail</p>

It's also possible to add rollover text if desired:

¹Dynamic markers generate HTML list structure.

Also, external links will also work within BGA if you want the image to link to a URL:
²Without dynamic markers, <code><nowiki><p></nowiki></code>[https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/p paragraphs]<code><nowiki></p></nowiki></code> are generated which require line breaks before and after the "list" to prevent merging into surrounding paragraphs.

==Infoboxes==
Level 1 (h1) headings are the title of the page e.g. <code>= Wiki formatting =</code>, <code>= Gamehelp[name] =</code>, <code>= Tips_[name] =</code>.

These are only used by a few game pages, but [[:Template:InfoBox]], [[:Template:InfoBoxes]] and [[:Template:InfoBoxes3]] allow game information to be displayed in one, two or three coloured boxes, in a way that also works in the BGA view. They look like this:
===Issues===

{{InfoBox|title=Example|body=Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.}}
# In-game h2 and h3 headings are visually indistinguishable.
# In-game h3 headings overlap text from the previous section.
# h5 headings and below are visually indistinguishable from body text.
# Inconsistency between in-game and game panel headings.

* '''[https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=86652 h2/h3 headings not nested]'''
* '''[https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=71867 Section headings overlapping text]'''

As of May 2023, linking to a section within a rules page (eg. <code><nowiki>[[#endgame|the Endgame phase]]</nowiki></code>) does not work when the page is viewed on BGA, either during a live game or on the gamepanel page. In both cases, a link like <code>#endgame</code> is converted to https://boardgamearena.com/doc#endgame, an index of games rules. A player who clicks such a link during a game will be taken away from the game they are playing, and not given the information that they expected.
===Workarounds===

<small>
Since in-game h3 headings became indistinguishable from h2 headings:
Relevant bug reports:
* Change h3 to h4 headings.
* [https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=88292 Section links don't work in the BGA view of wiki rules pages]
* Use additional line breaks before h3 headings.

===Dice===
==Links==

Six-sided dice can be displayed using a template, eg. <code><nowiki>{{whiteDie|=6}}</nowiki></code>.
'''[https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Links Help:Links]'''

See '''[[Gamehelpdudo|GameHelpDudo]]''' for examples.
* The '''[[Main_Page]]''' (root) of this wiki redirects to '''[[Help]]'''.
* '''[https://BoardGameArena.com/doc BoardGameArena.com/doc]''' displays the '''[[Help]]''' index of games.
* Note: each heading has a unique id appended with a number as necessary.
*: e.g. [[#Issues_3]] links to Links Issues and [[#Issues_4]] links to Images Issues.

Dice are available in four colours: whiteDie, yellowDie, orangeDie and blackDie:
===Issues===

{{whiteDie|=1}}
# '''Links to section headings <code>#</code>''' do not work outside of the wiki ('''doc.'''BoardGameArena.com).
{{yellowDie|=2}}
# URL is resolved to <code>/doc</code> instead of the current page.
{{orangeDie|=3}}
# In-game links navigate the user away from the game.
{{blackDie|=4}}

===Meeples===
e.g. <code><nowiki>[[#Section_heading_link]]</nowiki></code> ⇨ https://BoardGameArena.com/doc#Section_heading_link ¹.

Meeple icons can be displayed with eg. <code><nowiki>{{meeple|red}}</nowiki></code> for {{meeple|red}}
====Bug reports====

Available colours are currently red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white and grey.

===Option grids===
===Option grids===

Where a game has multiple interdependent options, it can be useful to have a visual option grid.
Option grids can help visualise multiple interdependent options.

Where inflexible wiki text tables fall short, HTML + [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/grid CSS grid] is responsive to screen size e.g. '''[[Gamehelppente|GameHelpPente]]''':
Not for the faint-hearted, but with a lot of inline css, it is possible to create a nice aesthetic and intuitive grid that is responsive to screen size. For example for '''[[Gamehelppente|GameHelpPente]]''':

<div style="display:flex;flex-flow:row wrap;max-width:max-content;border:0.1rem solid #aaa;">
<div style="display:flex;flex-flow:row wrap;max-width:max-content;border:0.1rem solid #aaa;">

Purpose

This page was created as a result of the Wiki style guide forum thread.

Most wiki (doc.BoardGameArena.com) formatting is not preserved on BoardGameArena.com, but there are some workarounds. This page is a collection of unofficial tips on how to make wiki pages display well in-game and on game panels.

Feel free to add additional issues, advice and templates 🙂

Help:Formatting

Note: Wiki page changes are updated once per day on BoardGameArena.com.

Languages

Wiki page content displays:

  1. User's language, else
  2. English, else
  3. Create this page link/button.

e.g. A Chinese user reads the Jump Drive rules summary on its game panel page, displayed in English (en.doc.boardgamearena.com/Gamehelpjumpdrive) because the Chinese (zh.doc.boardgamearena.com/Gamehelpjumpdrive) page does not exist. The user sees a typo in the English rules and selects the edit page link to correct it, but the Chinese wiki's create page is displayed instead.

Workarounds

  1. Use static markers (,-,1.).
  2. Replace with HTML + CSS.

¹Dynamic markers generate HTML list structure.

²Without dynamic markers, <p>paragraphs</p> are generated which require line breaks before and after the "list" to prevent merging into surrounding paragraphs.

Headings

Level 1 (h1) headings are the title of the page e.g. = Wiki formatting =, = Gamehelp[name] =, = Tips_[name] =.

Issues

  1. In-game h2 and h3 headings are visually indistinguishable.
  2. In-game h3 headings overlap text from the previous section.
  3. h5 headings and below are visually indistinguishable from body text.
  4. Inconsistency between in-game and game panel headings.

Bug reports

Workarounds

Since in-game h3 headings became indistinguishable from h2 headings:

  • Change h3 to h4 headings.
  • Use additional line breaks before h3 headings.

    Links

    Help:Links

    Issues

    1. Links to section headings # do not work outside of the wiki (doc.BoardGameArena.com).
    2. URL is resolved to /doc instead of the current page.
    3. In-game links navigate the user away from the game.

    e.g. [[#Section_heading_link]]https://BoardGameArena.com/doc#Section_heading_link ¹.

    Bug reports

    Workarounds

    1. Remove links that do not function as expected.

    Images

    Help:Images

    Issues

    1. Resized images do not display on BoardGameArena.com.
      e.g. [[File:Marrakech_example.jpg|300px]]) because the resized image does not exist in the referenced directory.
    2. Image links do not work on BoardGameArena.com.
      e.g. [[File:Versions.png|link=https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/images/b/b5/Factum_Rules_Summary_EN_v1.jpg]] because the link resolves to https://boardgamearena.com/dochttps://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/images/b/b5/Factum_Rules_Summary_EN_v1.jpg

    Workarounds

    1. Upload YourImage with the size it will appear.
    2. Create a {{gameIcon}} with a scale factor.
      e.g. {{YourIcon|scale=0.5}} to reduce the image dimensions by ½.
    3. Replace image links with regular links.
      e.g. [[File:Versions.png]]
      [https://en.doc.boardgamearena.com/images/b/b5/Factum_Rules_Summary_EN_v1.jpg LinkText]

    Tips

    1. Optionally include rollover text [[File:Marrakech_example.jpg|Example move]]

    1. width: 98%; stretches tables across the screen on BoardGameArena.com.
    2. Borders do not display on BoardGameArena.com.

    Workarounds

    Option grids

    Option grids can help visualise multiple interdependent options. Where inflexible wiki text tables fall short, HTML + CSS grid is responsive to screen size e.g. GameHelpPente:

    Training mode only
    Default
    Other
    # of players
    2
    3
    4
    Free-for-all

    No effect: a stone may be placed in a capture position
    Self-capture: results in self-capture! (Poof Pente)
    Forbidden: a stone may not be placed in a capture position
    Overtime capture
    Break the line: may capture to break a winning line (Boat Pente)
