Game Overview
In the lively taverns of the Netherlands, players gather for Toepen, a fast-paced trick-taking game for 3 to 8 people. Thematically, it is about outsmarting opponents through strategic bluffing and timely knocking to raise the stakes and force others to fold. Mechanically, players must manage 4 hand cards effectively to win the crucial final trick and avoid losing their precious lives.
Goal of the Game
The goal is to win the 4th (last) trick of a round. The player who wins this trick is safe, while all other players lose lives according to the current stake.
Gameplay
Dealing and Preparation
Each player is dealt 4 cards from a 32-card deck. The ranking is unique (high to low): 10, 9, 8, 7, Ace, King, Queen, Jack.
Exchanging Cards
Players holding only Face cards or Aces may discard them face down and draw new ones. Opponents may challenge this; if a player is caught lying (holding a 7 through 10), they lose 1 life immediately.
Trick-Taking
The eldest hand leads the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible. If unable to follow suit, any card may be played. The winner of a trick leads the next one. The winner of the 4th trick wins the round.
Special Actions (Knocking)
| Action | Description | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Knocking (Toep!) | A player knocks on the table. | Increases the stake by 1 point. |
| Stay | An opponent accepts the knock. | They continue playing for the higher penalty. |
| Fold | An opponent rejects the knock. | They leave the round immediately and lose the previous (lower) stake. |
Game End & Scoring
- Players typically start with 10 to 15 lives.
- A player is eliminated when they reach 0 lives.
- The last remaining player wins the game.
- Poverty: A player with only 1 life remaining cannot knock but can still be knocked upon.
