Trickster Gods
In this trick-taking game for 3-4 players, players win tricks to manipulate the Cosmic Equation, which dictates scoring at the end of each round.
Round Structure
The game consists of a fixed number of rounds (equal to the number of players). Each round includes:
- Passing: At the start, everyone selects 2 cards from their hand and passes them face-down to another player (direction varies by round).
- Playing Tricks: Tricks are played one after another until all hand cards are exhausted.
- Scoring: Points are calculated based on the final state of the equation.
Trick-Taking Rules
Standard must-follow rules apply. If you have the led suit, you must play it.
- Lead: The lead player plays a card. Trump cannot be led in the 1st trick of a round (unless you only hold trump).
- Trump: The current trump suit is shown by the corresponding parameter card.
- Cosmic Joke: This card can be played at any time (even if you can follow suit). It is the highest card and always wins the trick.
- Determining the Winner: The highest card of the trump suit (or the highest card of the led suit if no trump is present) wins. Note: The "Wee Folk" power card can flip this rule to "Lowest card wins."
Post-Trick Actions
The winner of the trick performs the following steps:
- Modify Equation: If the trick contains God or Animal cards, the winner may place 1 onto a matching slot (operand) in the Cosmic Equation. The previous card there is discarded.
- Lead: The winner takes the trick and becomes the new lead player.
- Power Cards: Any player who loses the lead (was the previous lead but did not win the trick) may activate 1 of their 3 Power Cards:
- Rabbit: Changes the trump suit.
- Fox: Swaps or flips an operator (plus/minus/multiply) in the equation.
- Wee Folk: Changes the win condition (Highest wins vs. Lowest wins).
End of Game & Scoring
The round ends after the last trick is played.
- Scoring: Points are awarded based on the final equation (e.g., [God A] x [# of Animal B] + [# of Animal C]).
- Spurning the Gods: If you took 0 tricks, you score the sum of the equation's rank values as a bonus instead.
- Winner: After all rounds, the player with the highest total score wins.
