Overview

Tic Tac Two is tic-tac-toe played on two boards at once.

  • The main board works like normal tic-tac-toe. The first player is X and the second player is O.
  • The tile board is a second 3×3 grid of face-down tiles. Each tile sits in the same position as a square on the main board.

When you place a mark on the main board, the tile in the same position on the tile board is flipped face up.

Get three in a row on either board to win.

The tiles

The 8 outer tiles are shuffled face down at the start of the game:

  • 3 X tiles: count for X.
  • 3 O tiles: count for O.
  • 1 Wild tile: counts for both players on every line.
  • 1 Peek tile: lets you secretly look at one face-down tile (see below). It counts for nobody on the tile board.

The center tile

The center tile is never shuffled. It is always the special split center:

  • Until someone places a mark in the main board's center, it counts for nobody.
  • Once a player claims the main board's center, the split center counts as:
    • that player's symbol for the middle row and middle column
    • the opponent's symbol for both diagonals
  • It never moves or changes after that.

Your turn

  1. Place your mark on any empty square of the main board.
  2. The tile in the same position flips face up. If you took the center, the split center activates.
  3. If you flipped the Peek tile, choose any face-down tile. Only you see what it is. Your opponent is told which square you looked at, but not what the tile is. If no face-down tiles remain, Peek does nothing.
  4. Both boards are checked for three in a row.

Winning

You win by making three in a row on either board:

  • Main board: three of your marks in a row, column, or diagonal.
  • Tile board: three face-up tiles in a line that all count for you. Your own symbol and Wild tiles count, and so does the split center if it counts for you on that line.

Tie: If both players complete a line on the same turn, the game is a tie.

Draw: If all 9 squares are filled and nobody has a line, the game is a draw.

Tips

  • Every mark you place also flips a tile, so a square that looks good on the main board might give your opponent a line on the tile board.
  • Claiming the center is a mixed blessing. It helps you on the middle row and column, but it helps your opponent on both diagonals.
  • The Wild tile helps both players, so watch the lines it sits on.
