Go-Stop (Hanafuda) - Quick Rules
Overview
- Players: Ideally 3 players (2-player variants exist).
- Deck: Hanafuda deck (48 cards, 12 flower suits representing months).
- Objective: Be the first to reach a minimum point threshold (usually 3 points) and decide whether to continue ("Go") or end the round ("Stop").
Setup
- The dealer deals cards to players and the table center (typically 6 hand / 6 table for 3 players).
- Play proceeds counter-clockwise.
Gameplay
On your turn, perform the following steps:
- Play from Hand: Match a card from your hand with one of the same suit (month/flower) on the table. If no match exists, discard it face up.
- Draw from Deck: Flip the top card of the draw pile. If it matches a card on the table, you take both.
- Collect: Any matches made are placed face up in your scoring area, categorized by type.
Card Types & Scoring
- Brights (Gwang): 5 cards marked with the "Light" symbol. 3 cards = 3 pts (usually 2 if rain is included), 4 = 4 pts, all 5 = 15 pts.
- Animals (Yul): Cards featuring animals. 5 cards = 1 pt, each additional = +1 pt. Special "Godori" (3 specific birds) = 5 pts.
- Ribbons (Ti): Cards with scrolls/ribbons. 5 ribbons = 1 pt, each additional = +1 pt. Sets of 3 matching ribbons (e.g., all blue) = 3 pts.
- Junk (Pi): Basic cards. 10 cards = 1 pt, each additional = +1 pt. (Double-Pi count as 2 cards).
Go or Stop?
When a player reaches at least 3 points, they must announce:
- Stop: The round ends immediately, and the player wins their current score.
- Go: Play continues. The player gains bonuses (+1 pt for "One Go" and "Two Go", score doubling starting at "Three Go") but risks losing everything if another player scores first.
Special Rules (Selection)
- Puck (Bomb): If you hold three cards of a suit in your hand and the fourth is on the table, you can "bomb" the suit and take all four.
- Multipliers: Certain conditions (e.g., the winner having many Junk cards while losers have very few) can double the final payout for the losers.
