You usually want to win by gaining 4 different colored planets and this should be your aim each game unless conditions line up for the other two win conditions. Going for 3 of the same color makes you vulnerable as soon as you get the second token (since the token comes back to the middle and your opponent can pull it to their side right away). Going for 5 is more expensive than 4, but is a good option if you have 3 different colors claimed and your opponent is blocking the two other colors.

In technology, you usually want to focus on one specific path because the higher levels trigger all the previous levels. After the third level, it starts to be really good.

Taking the leadership badge with the diplomacy action gives you no planet moves, so it generally is only done if you need resources or want to draw more cards because you have a bad hand. One of the most common mistakes new players make is overvaluing the leadership badge.
