Game Overview

Quatrix combines line-building strategy with a forcing mechanic. Every move not only changes the board but also restricts the opponent's freedom of action.

Goal of the Game (Instant Win)

You win the game immediately if, at the end of any sub-step (placing or shifting):

  1. You form a continuous line of 4 of your color (horizontal, vertical, diagonal).
  2. You occupy 4 squares of the same color (e.g., 4x Blue) with your pieces.

Gameplay

A turn consists of two steps:

1. Placement & Controlling the Opponent

Place a piece on an empty cell. The symbol on your piece dictates the opponent's mandatory next move:

  • X Symbol: The opponent must place their next piece on a cell in a diagonal line from your piece.
  • Square Symbol (□): The opponent must place their next piece on a cell in an orthogonal line (horizontal/vertical).
  • Free Choice: If all cells in the required directions are occupied, the opponent may place their piece anywhere on an empty cell.

2. Shifting a Row (Optional)

You may shift any row or column by exactly one space.

  • Symmetry Rule: You cannot immediately reverse the shift made by the previous player (no back-and-forth sliding of the same row).
  • Pieces pushed off the edge return to their respective owner's supply.

Important Additional Details

Situation Rule
Simultaneous Win If a shift causes both players to meet a winning condition at the same time, the active player (the one who shifted) wins.
Order of Operations Place first, then shift. If a winning condition is met after placing, the game ends immediately before the shift happens.
Stalemate If the board is full and no one has met a winning condition, the player with the most pieces on the board wins.

Pro Tip

Use shifting not just to complete your lines, but primarily to "push" your opponent out of the colored squares they need for their color-quartet!
