Currencies

If you have to discard a currency then red is probably marginally the least valuable, but if possible try to always keep at least 1 red, 1 yellow and two white.

Prestige Buildings

Great Halls

If you have two yellow dice, consider building a great hall. If you have 3 yellow dice there has to be a good reason not to do so.

Fortresses

It can be a useful plan to use the first three "safe" rounds to build fortresses so you have some predictability for the rest of the game. These ideally should include pairs of adjacent column yielding bonuses on some rows, i.e. 1+2, 3+4 or 5+6

Cathedrals

These work better if combined with fortresses: the power of cathedrals derives primarily from the later built ones scoring 2x, or better 3x. If you're going to use them then you want to aim to build at least 5 so you have at least one 3x row. To ensure that the 3x and 2x go on columns matching rows where you will have a lot of buildings, you will need to leave these cathedrals until last, increasing the risk that they will be destroyed before they can be built. To avoid this, you probably want to build fortresses on these columns. This means that you will be trying to build at least 5 cathedrals and at least 4 fortresses. This in turn means that the column-1 and column-5 cathedrals (for the fortress and cathedral rows) should ideally be your last two cathedrals, and hence the fortresses on the same columns should be amongst your first builds.

Citizens

Citizens are points, but the bonuses gained from them are also very valuable. The "one of each resource" bonus is easy to acquire and should be gained in most games. With the aid of the matching Great Hall, and/or with a high-earning Cathedral, it is often easier to acquire significant numbers of a single colour citizen than moderate numbers of all three. This means it is normally easier to hit the 15 column bonus than the 11 or even 6 column bonuses.
