Discard cards that are too big in numbers (unless your combination requires it). Pairs are often worth keeping (at least for a while), even if they are high cards.

Calling ppong becomes more useful the more players there are. They allow you to skip people's turns, and you can use other people's discards, increasing your chances to get the cards you need.

Other winning hands are easier to make in two-player games than in games with more players, because you are much more likely to draw the cards you need yourself.

Straights are particularly strong in two-player games because they are valuable and often not too hard to make.

Less than 10 is really hard to do (because you need at least five 1s or 2s and no card higher than 3). Greater than 66 is easier, but more risky. (If you're very far behind, going for less than 10 or greater than 66 can sometimes be the only realistic way to make a comeback in a two- or three-player game.)
