Overivew
With the announcement of the King's retirement, the pirouette for succession begins! All of his subjects from cobbler to cook, painter to paladin, debutante to duchess bustle about the castle in preparation for the succession. One of your favorites can attain the throne. But, beware! It will require clever maneuvering and selective positioning to be in the right place at the right time to achieve the crown!
Vive le Roi! is a 2-8 players bluff and deduction game. Players receive a card that lists a number of characters, and they keep this card hidden from the other players. The game is won by points, and players gain points depending on how "high" up in the castle their characters are located. Lower floors are worth fewer points, and higher floors are worth more.
Gameplay
A game contain 3 coronations. After the 3rd coronation, the layer who totals the most points wins the game.
Before a coronation starts, each player receives a Favorites cards which shows 6 characters who you can make them score points. Also, each player receives the same number of vote cards:
Players | YES | NO | Stomachache |
---|---|---|---|
2-3 | 1 | 4 | 1 |
4 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
5-8 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
A coronation contains 2 phases: Placing phase and Moving phase.
Phase 1: Placing
Starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player takes turns placing a Character on one of the floor 1,2,3,4 of the Castle. You cannot place a character in floors 0 or above 4. The limit of each floor is 4 characters (3 characters in 2-player game).
Stop placing when all players have placed the same number of characters. All reamaing characters are placed on floor 0.
- At 2,3,4 and 6 players: there is only one character left.
- At 5 players, there are 3 characters left.
- With 7/8 players: each player places 2 characters except the last / the last 3 player(s) who place(s) only one. They each score(s) 3 compensation points.
Phase 2: Moving
Starting with the first player and going clockwise, each player must move one of the characters up one floor in their turn.
You can never exceed the limit of 4 characters per floor (3 for 2-player game). However, you may move a character into the WC of the upper floor (only if the characters limit is reached and the WC is free). The character in the WC can then only exit on the same floor (if the characters limit is not reached).
As soon as a player brings a character up to the Thronoe Room at the top of the castle, a Coronation procedure is triggered!
Each player votes by choosing one of their vote cards (YES, NO or Stomachache). Then all player reveal their cards simultaneously.
- Reject
At least one NO is played: the character is rejected. If no Stomachache has been played, the character is sent to the Dungeonnext to the floor 3/2/1 for the 1st/2nd/3rd rejected. The following rejected characters return to the box.
Then the round continues with the next player.
- Cancellation
If at least one Stomachache is played: the coronation procedure is cancelled. The character is neither crowned nor thrown into the Dungeon. He remains in play and simply goes back down to floor 5.
Then the round continues with the next player.
- Unanimity
All players voted YES: A new King is crowned! The round is over and points are immediately counted.
Scoring
Player scores according to the characters printed on their Favorites card.
If the Jester isn't the King, Score normally. For character(s) in ...
- Floor 6 (the King): 10 Points
- In a WC or in the box: 0 Points
- In a dungeon: negative score with the floor they located.
- Others: positive score with the floor they located.
Special Case: the Jester
The Jester is always started at floor 3. He is not printed on any Favorites card. However, if the Jester is the crowned King, scores are reversed:
- Floor 6 (the King): 0 Points
- In a WC or in the box: 0 Points
- In a dungeon: positive score with the floor they located.
- Others: negative score with the floor they located.
If the Jester is redjected as King, he does not go to a dungeon. He remains in play and return to floor 2 (if full, move downward).
New round (coronation)
When the coronation of a new King ends round 1 or 2, the game continues and a new round is started. The first player is the one who triggered the final coronation of the previous round.
If the King's coronation ends the 3rd round, the game is over. The player with the most points is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the highest Favorite in the castle wins.
Options and Variants
Ambition
Before each round, each player is dealed with 2 Ambition cards. Each player looks at them and chooses one to keep.
At the end of a round, during the counting, each player reveal his Ambition card: if the condition is met, the points indicated in the seal at the top left is scored. This score remain positive in case of Jester being crowned.
The Banished
The character that is marked with a black seal is not count as a Favorite. In short, you play with 5 favorites instead of 6.
The Emassiry of the Empire (2-5 players)
Must be used with 2 players. In 3/4 players game, each player take 3/2 NO cards instead.
The empissary takes cards like normal player. He never move characters, he simply votes. During an election, if the character is one of his Favorites, the Emissary always votes YES. Otherwise, the first card of his vote pile is reveal and applied (and eliminated after the vote).
When a King is crowned, the Emissary scores points with his Favorites normally. At the end of the game, if the Emissary is ahead of all the players, he has won and all the other players have lost.
