Truco Paulista is one of Brazil's most popular card games. Two teams of two play with a 40-card deck (no 8s, 9s, or 10s), partners sitting across from each other, and the first team to reach 12 points wins.

Each hand, every player gets three cards and one more is turned face up: the vira. The card just above it in rank becomes the manilha, the strongest card of the hand, and suit hierarchy breaks ties between manilhas, with clubs (the Zap) on top. A hand is played over up to three tricks: the strongest card takes each trick, and the team that wins two takes the hand. From the second trick on, you can also play a card face down: it is worth nothing, but nobody ever sees it.

What makes Truco special is the bluff. A hand starts worth 1 point, but on your turn you can shout "Truco!" to raise it to 3. The other team must accept, fold, or re-raise to 6, 9, or 12. When a team reaches 11 points, the Hand of 11 lets partners see each other's cards and choose whether to play. If both teams reach 11, the Iron Hand is played blind, and whoever wins it wins the game.
