Overview & Objective
Spicy is a bluffing card game for 2 to 6 players designed by Zoltán Győri and published by HeidelBÄR Games. Three big cats (Wasabi, Chili, and Pepper) compete in an eating contest. Players place cards face down in escalating numerical order, announcing numbers and suits—truthfully or as bluffs. The goal is to win cards into a personal trophy pile by surviving challenges or successfully catching opponents' bluffs, as well as securing high-value Trophy cards.
Components & Setup
- Card Composition: 110 cards total:
- 90 Spice cards: 30 each of Chili, Wasabi, and Pepper (numbered 1–10).
- 5 Wild (Spice) cards.
- 5 Wild (Number) cards.
- 3 Trophy cards (placed face up in the center).
- 6 "Spice It Up!" variant cards (optional modules).
- 1 End card ("World's End").
- Setup:
- Shuffle the spice deck.
- Deal 6 cards to each player.
- Insert the End card face down into the draw deck at a depth corresponding to player count (roughly one-third from the bottom).
Gameplay
On their turn, each player must choose one of two actions:
1. Play a Card
Place one card face down on the active stack and announce its suit and number:
- Starting a stack: The first card must be declared as a 1, 2, or 3 of any spice (e.g., "Wasabi 2").
- Following the stack: Subsequent cards must match the same spice suit and claim a strictly higher number (e.g., "Wasabi 5", followed by "Wasabi 8").
- Cycling past 10: After a declared 10, the stack resets: the next player must play a 1, 2, or 3 of the same spice.
- Bluffing: Players may play any card from their hand, regardless of what they announce. It is legal to bluff the suit, the number, or both.
2. Pass
A player who cannot or does not wish to play draws 1 card from the draw deck. Play passes clockwise.
Challenges
Immediately after a card is played, any player may challenge by placing their hand on the stack and declaring specifically:
- "Not that spice!" (Suit challenge)
- "Not that number!" (Number challenge)
Note: General bluff calls are not permitted; the challenger must name whether the spice or the number is false.
Challenge Resolution
Flip the top card of the stack:
- Challenger is correct: If the card fails to match the claimed attribute (e.g., the challenger claimed "Not Wasabi" and the card is Chili), the challenger wins.
- Challenger is incorrect: If the tested attribute is true (even if the untested attribute was a lie), the card player wins.
Outcomes
- Winner: Takes the entire stack face down into their personal scoring pile (each card counts as 1 point at the end of the game). The winner starts the next stack with a 1, 2, or 3 of any spice.
- Loser: Draws 2 penalty cards from the draw deck.
Wild Cards
- Wild (Spice): Functions as any suit, but possesses no numeric value. Always wins if challenged on spice; always loses if challenged on number.
- Wild (Number): Functions as any number, but possesses no spice suit. Always wins if challenged on number; always loses if challenged on spice.
Trophy Cards & End of Game
Claiming Trophies
- When a player successfully plays the last card in their hand and survives any challenge, they claim 1 Trophy card (worth 10 bonus points).
- The player then draws a fresh hand of 6 cards, and game play resumes.
Game End Triggers
The game ends immediately when:
- One player claims 2 Trophy cards (instant victory), or
- All 3 Trophy cards have been claimed, or
- The draw deck is depleted and the End card is revealed.
Final Scoring
If no player achieved an instant victory with 2 Trophy cards:
- Each card in personal win pile: +1 point
- Each Trophy card: +10 points
- Each card remaining in hand: −1 point
The player with the highest overall score wins.
