Safari Witness
Safari Witness is a competitive deduction game where players act as witnesses on a safari. The goal is to determine the exact number and species of animals present in the park. The player who gathers the most accurate information and makes the best predictions wins.
Game Objective
Earn the most Victory Points by correctly identifying the quantity of the five animal species (Lion, Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe, Rhino). Points are awarded for exact matches, close guesses, and collected hint cards.
Game Setup
- There are 5 species. The total count of each species in the park is secret at the start.
- Each player receives several private hint cards revealing a portion of the truth.
- A central board displays potential animal locations and tracking tracks.
Game Flow
The game is played over several rounds. On their turn, a player performs one of the following actions:
1. Observation
- Select a Sighting Card from the deck or the display.
- These cards show either an exact count of a specific animal or a relation (e.g., "More Zebras than Lions").
- Use this information to update your personal deduction sheet.
2. Inquiry
- You may question other players or the "Park Ranger" (the deck).
- This allows you to gain information about cards held by opponents or those lying face-down in the center.
3. Publish Evidence
- A player can choose to reveal a hint publicly to gain immediate victory points.
- Risk: A published hint also assists all other players in their deductions.
4. Make a Prediction
- Towards the end of the game, players place their prediction markers on a scale.
- You commit to a specific total count for a chosen animal species.
Key Symbols & Categories
The following categories are crucial for your deduction:
- Animal Icons: Lion, Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe, and Rhino.
- Number Cards: Provide a fixed sum (e.g., "There are exactly 3 Giraffes").
- Comparison Symbols: Greater than (>), Less than (<), or Equal (=).
- Color Coding: Helps quickly associate information with the correct animal groups.
End of Game & Scoring
The game ends when all predictions are placed or the draw deck is empty.
- The Reveal: All hidden animal cards are revealed and summed up.
- Scoring:
- Exact Match: Maximum points.
- Close Match: Reduced points based on the margin of error.
- Bonus Points: Awarded for completed objective cards or early correct predictions.
The player with the highest total score is declared the Master Observer.
Strategic Considerations
- Process of Elimination: Note not only what you know but also what is mathematically impossible.
- Bluffing: Sometimes publishing a hint can mislead opponents if you are strategically withholding more definitive information.
