Overview
In KoPlus, 2players to 4players players are competing to capture alien creatures worth the most points by alternatively placing ➕ and コ shaped pentomino tiles (called NET) on the game board.
Game Board
The game board consists of a number of 4x4 sections put together in a rectangular shape. The number of sections used is 9/12/16 for 2players/3players/4players-player game. Some of the board spaces contain aliens of values ranging from 1 to 5 (as seen by the number of dots visible on each alien).
Gameplay
During the game, players take turns placing a NET tile from hand on the board. The first placed tile must be コ for odd-numbered players, and ➕ for even-numbered ones. On his/her subsequent turns, each player must alternate between コ and ➕.
The first NET tile of the game can be placed anywhere on the board, where it doesn't cover any part of the outside 4x4 sections. The subsequent tile placements are subject to following restrictions:
- 👾 The tile must not cover any part of existing tiles on the board
- 👾 The tile must cover at least one space adjacent to an already placed tile (of any player)
- 👾 The tile must not be placed so that the total value of the aliens it covers is greater than 9
After placing a NET tile, the current player immediately scores the sum of all alien values covered by the tile.
Bonus Turns
If a player's score after placing a tile is exactly 20, 40 or 60, that player must immediately take another turn. However the number of bonus turns per game available to each player is limited as follows:
| Player count | 1st Player | 2nd Player | 3rd Player | 4th Player |
| 2players | 2 | 3 | - | - |
| 3players | 1 | 2 | 2 | - |
| 4players | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
Game End
The game ends as soon as no player can place any more tiles. At this time, the final scoring takes place.
For scoring purposes, player's tiles on the board can either be isolated NET tiles, that are not adjacent to any other tiles of the same player, and NET groups, consisting of 2 or more adjacent tiles. Player's maximal NET groups' are the groups with the maximum number of tiles NET groups of that player.
Each player score change during final scoring is determined as follows:
- ⭐ +5 points for having a maximal NET group that's not smaller than maximal NET groups of other players
- ⭐ -5 points for each isolated NET tile
- ⭐ -3 points for each non-isolated NET tile that's also not part of any maximal NET group
The player with the highest total score wins the game. The ties are resolved by the highest number of tiles left in each player's hand.
