Hachi-hachi rule
Basic Rules
Hachi-hachi is a game of Hanafuda played for a year in 12 months (12 deals).
A month (1 deal) consists of a bidding phase and a play phase.
- One set of Hanafuda (12 suits, 4 cards each) is used.
- The units of scoring are kan and mon, with one kan being 12 mon. mon is zero or a positive number.
As an example, if you pay 5 mon, it will be displayed as -1 kan 7 mon.
In BGA it uses kan in the display of scores. (Internally, mon is also calculated.) - The number of players is between 3 and 6.
- Play is performed in a counterclockwise direction.
- In the play phase, play is done by three players.
- All willow suit cards count as Chaff cards in the hand yakus (Te-Yaku), card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), and special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku).
Initial Preparation
- Randomly determines the dealer and the player seating order of the players.
- Each player starts play with -5 kans.
Play in a month (1 Deal)
- The dealer can declare Mizuten ("Join The Play" before looking at his/her cards).

The dealer deals 7 cards to each player in turn.
It also opens 6 cards on the table. -
Determine the small deal, big deal or great deal.
If no Bright cards appear on the table, the deal becomes a small deal and there is no change in the points gained or lost.
If a Bright card of pine, cherry blossom or Eulalia appears on the table, the deal becomes a big deal, and all subsequent gains and losses are doubled.
If a Bright card of willow or paulownia appears on the table, the deal becomes a great deal, and all subsequent gains and losses are quadrupled.
If more than one Bright card appears in the table, the second and subsequent big deal or great deal will be carried over to the next month.
If both big deal and great deal are issued, great deal takes precedence for the month.
Bidding phase

Starting with the dealer, each player looks at his/her dealt cards and declares whether he or she is "Join The Play" or "Get Out of Play".
In the case of Mizuten, the dealer has already declared "Join The Play".
If the player declares "Get Out of Play", the first player pays 1 kan, the next player pays 1.5 kans, and the third player pays 2 kans. -
If three players declare "Join The Play", the remaining players cannot "Join The Play".
Players who cannot participate in the play will receive the points from the players who declared "Join The Play" according to the contents of his/her hand. - If (number of players minus 3) players declare "Get Out of Play", the remaining players are forced to declare "Join The Play".
- The players who declares "Join The Play" and has a hand yakus (Te-Yaku) receives hand yakue points from each of the two players.
- The cards in the hands of players not participating in play are shuffled together with the cards not dealt, and the deck is made up.
Scoring of players who cannot participate in the play
The player who cannot participate in the play because three players have declared "Join The Play" receives the following points from the three players depending on the contents of his/her hand.
- If the player has hand yakus (Te-Yaku), the player receive half the points of the hand yaku points from each of the three players.
- If the player has all cards of card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) in his hand, he receives half of the points of the card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) from each of the three players.
- If the player has each of the six Ribbon cards of pine, plum blossom, cherry blossom, peony, chrysanthemum, Maple or five Bright cards in the hand receives 3 mons from each of the three players.
Playing phase
- Players play in the order in which they declared "Join The Play".

Three players take turns to play and get cards.
The active player plays a card from the hand (or from opened hand cards) and there is a card of the same suit on the table, the player gains played card and the card on the table corresponding to the card played.
Next, The active player draws a card from the deck, and if there is a card of the same suit in the table, the player gains the drawn card and the card on the table corresponding to the card drawn.
If two cards of the same suit appear in the table, the player chooses which card to acquire.
If there are three cards of the same suit in the table, the player gets all four cards.
If there are four cards of the same suit in the table, the first seat player gets four cards.
If there are no cards of the same suit in the table, the player cannot gain cards. The card remains on the table.

When a player make a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) with the cards he or she has acquired, the play phase ends immediately and the scoring start.
- When a player has one more card to complete a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) (three red poetry Ribbons, three blue Ribbons, four Brights, or five Brights),
With Hatto rule, the player who plays the last card or the card corresponding to the last card of the hand pays for the two players alone when the player completes a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku).
Note that if there is only one card remaining in the hand, it does not fall under Hatto.
When a player could have stopped his or her opponent from making a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) with his or her dealt cards, but did not, and the opponent ended up making the card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), The Hatto rule applies in this case. - If there is an additional 1 kan associated with the hand yakus (Te-Yaku) or Mizuten, it will be paid.
rule of continue playing
When a player make a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) and is likely to make another card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), he or she may continue to play.
In the BGA, if there is no possibility that another possible card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) can be made, the game will be moved to the scoring calculation without confirming whether or not to continue play.
After play continues
- When the player who continue playing completes another card set yaku (Deki-Yaku)
The player receive both card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) points. - When another player completes a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku)
card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) of the player who continue playing is nullified.
The player who continue playing pays two players' points alone. - when no player completes card set yaku (Deki-Yaku)
If play continues and the deal ends without any player having made a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), the player who continued to play receives half of the point of the card set yaku (Deki-Yaku).
scoring

When the play phase ends without card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), check the special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku).
If a special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku) is made, the score is calculated.
In addition, if a special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku) is made, the hand yakus (Te-Yaku) paid at the beginning of this deal and the payment associated with the hand yakus (Te-Yaku) will be refunded. -
If there is neither card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) nor special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku), the score is calculated.
Each player calculate sum of the scores of the cards he or she acquired, he or she receive (sum points minus 88)/12 kans. (If the score is negative, it is paid.) -
The player with the highest score receives the payment of the player declares "Get Out of Play".
If there are two players with the highest score, the player with the first place in the order of play receives the payment of the player declares "Get Out of Play". - The player with the highest number of points will be the dealer for the following month.
Final Settlement
At the end of 12 months play, the player with the highest score receives a score of (player number multiply by 5) kans as the top prize.
If there is more than one player with the same highest score at the end of play, those players will split the top prize.
Variant Rules
game length
Half Year game : Play 6 deals(months). Each player starts play with -3 kans.
Full Year game : Play 12 deals(months). Each player starts play with -5 kans.
3 players game
When there are three players, the bidding phase is omitted and only the play phase is conducted.
Hand yaku, card set yaku and special scoring yaku are handled as usual.
Details of yakus
List of Hand yakus (Te-Yaku)
There are two types of hand yakus: by Chaff cards and by distribution of suits.
If there are both by Chaff cards and by distribution of suits, the player will get points for both.
Hand yakus by Chaff cards

All Chaff (4 kan)
If a player has 7 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) in his/her hand the player receive 4 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens all cards in his/her hand.
If a player scores 89 points or more, he or she will receive one additional kan. -
Single Bright (4 kan)
If a player has 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) and a Bright card in his/her hand the player receive 4 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) in his/her hand. -
Single Animal (3 kan)
If a player has 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) and a Animal card in his/her hand the player receive 3 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) in his/her hand.
If a player scores 89 points or more, he or she will receive one additional kan. -
Single Ribbon (3 kan)
If a player has 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) and a Ribbon card in his/her hand the player receive 3 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens 6 Chaff cards (including the willow suit) in his/her hand.
If a player scores 89 points or more, he or she will receive one additional kan. -
Red (2 kan)
If a player has only Chaff cards (including the willow suit) and Ribbon cards in his/her hand the player receive 2 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens Chaff cards (including the willow suit) in his/her hand.
If a player scores 89 points or more, he or she will receive one additional kan.
If all seven cards in the hand are Ribbon cards, the hand yaku is also Aka, but in this case the cards in the hand are not open.
Hand yakus by distribution of suits

Three (2 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 31111 or 3211 the player receive 2 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens three cards in his/her hand.
If the player gets all four cards of that suit in play, he or she get one additional kan. -
Weak Three (3 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 31111 or 3211 and the three cards suit is wisteria, iris, bush clover, or three Chaff cards of paulownia the player receive 3 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens three cards in his/her hand.
If the player gets all four cards of that suit in play, he or she get one additional kan. -
Three Pairs (4 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 2221 the player receive 4 kans from each of the opponent players..
The player opens three pairs in his/her hand. -
Four (6 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 4111 the player receive 6 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens four cards in his/her hand. -
Full House (7 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 322 the player receive 7 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens all cards in his/her hand. -
One Two Four (8 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 421 the player receive 8 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens all cards in his/her hand. -
Double Threes (6 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 331 the player receive 6 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens both three cards in his/her hand.
If the player gets all four cards of that each suit in play, he or she get one additional kan. -
Three Weak Three (7 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 331 and one of the three cards suit is wisteria, iris, bush clover, or three Chaff cards of paulownia the player receive 7 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens both three cards in his/her hand.
If the player gets all four cards of that each suit in play, he or she get one additional kan. -
Double Weak Threes (8 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 331 and both of the three cards suits are wisteria, iris, bush clover, or three Chaff cards of paulownia the player receive 8 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens both three cards in his/her hand.
If the player gets all four cards of that each suit in play, he or she get one additional kan. -
Four Three (20 kan)
If the player's suit distribution in hand is 43 the player receive 20 kans from each of the opponent players.
The player opens all cards in his/her hand.

Mizuten
when the player who declares Mizuten scores 89 points or more the player receive 1 kan from each of the opponent players.
In the case of Mizuten, the player also receive an additional 1 kan from the players who declares "Get Out of Play" (does not participate in play).
List of Card set yaku (Deki-Yaku)
When a player acquires the card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) during play, the play phase ends immediately and the score is calculated.
When a player make a card set yaku (Deki-Yaku) and is likely to make another card set yaku (Deki-Yaku), he or she may continue to play.

Three Poetry Red Ribbons (7 kan)
When a player gets 3 Ribbon cards of pine, plum blossoms, and cherry blossoms the player receive 7 kans from each of the opponent players. -
Three Blue Ribbons (7 kan)
When a player gets 3 Ribbon cards of peony, chrysanthemum, and Maple the player receive 7 kans from each of the opponent players. -
Seven Ribbons (10 kan)
When a player gets 7 of the 9 Ribbon cards (except for the willow Ribbon card) the player receive 10 kans from each of the opponent players. -
Four Brights (10 kan)
When a player gets 4 Bright cards of pine, cherry blossoms, Eulalia and paulownia the player receive 10 kans from each of the opponent players. -
Five Brights (12 kan)
When a player gets 5 Bright cards of pine, cherry blossoms, Eulalia, paulownia and willow the player receive 12 kans from each of the opponent players.
List of special scoring yaku (Tokushu-Yaku)
The special scoring yaku will be confirmed at the end of the play phase.
The hand yakus (Te-Yaku) paid at the beginning of this deal and the payment associated with the hand yakus (Te-Yaku) will be refunded.

16 Chaff cards (12 kan)
If a player gets 16 or more Chaff cards (including the willow suit) at the end of play the player receive 12 kans from each of the opponent players.
For each additional Chaff card (including the willow suit), the score is increased by 2 kan. -
double score (10 kan)
If a player gets 168 score points or more at the end of play the player receive 10 kans from each of the opponent players.
For each additional point scored the score is increased by 1 kan. -
all 88 (10 kan)
If all three players have a score of 88 at the end of play the first player in the order of play wins.
The first player in the order of play receives 10 kan from each of the opponent players.
Hanafuda cards
Hanafuda cards consist of 12 suits, 4 cards in each, as follows.
