Sometimes it can be beneficial to intentionally take the 3-card penalty. There are at least two reasons why you might want this:

It is sometimes possible to "trap" an opponent's card. For example, suppose you have {{heart|=Q}}{{heart|=Q}}{{club|=K}}{{club|=K}}{{diamond|=K}}{{diamond|=K}}{{spade|=K}}{{spade|=K}} in your hand, but you don't have {{heart|=K}}. Any run that includes {{heart|=K}} would require a {{heart|=Q}}, and any set that includes {{heart|=K}} would require another king. So if your opponent has one of the two {{heart|=K}}, they can never play it, so they can never win! (but they can still tie)

General

  • Try to win the game as quickly as possible.
  • Any cards you play can (and probably will) be used against you.
  • Inexperienced players are often so preoccupied with whether or not they can play a card, they don’t stop to think if they should play it.
  • Sometimes it can be beneficial to intentionally take the 3-card penalty.
    • There are at least two reasons why you might want this:
      1. To get a specific card, if you think you can not win without it.
      2. To deplete the deck and end the game in a tie.
  • It is sometimes possible to "trap" an opponent's card.
    • For example: suppose you have ♥♥♣♣♦♦♠♠ in your hand, but you don't have ♥.
      • Any run that includes ♥ would require a ♥, and any set that includes ♥ would require another king.
      • So if your opponent has one of the two ♥, they can never play it, so they can never win! (But they can still tie.)
