Overview

Build a magnificent castle and complete it before anyone else

Turn

There are 6 phases

Travel

Actions

Refill

Castle Income

Ally Income

Reorganisation

Travel Phase

Choose whether to move 0-4 spaces clockwise on the Voyage Board

Each space moved costs 1 Augustalis

Action Phase

Play one card

You can play cards in any order and do not have to fill certain slots in order to fill others

Having said that, the right-most card slot is blocked until you unlock it later

You can play a card face up and take the action of the card itself

You can play a card face down and take the action of ONE of the two board icons which are adjacent to it (far left and far right slot only have one adjacent icon, so no choice)

If the next player hasn't passed, they start from the Travel Phase, if all players have passed, the action phase ends

Refill Phase

All players discard all played cards

All players MAY discard additional cards still in their hand

All players draw back up to 5 cards

All drawn and discarded cards go to a personal deck and discard pile

Castle Income Phase

If a side of your castle has a wall with two towers either side of it, you gain what's next to the exclamation point. You do this for all sides which qualify for this income.

Ally Income

Yellow allies give the controlling player VP based on what Frederick has in Frederick's Castle and Frederick's Specialists

Blue Allies give VP based on what the player has in the player's Castle and the player's Specialists

Otherwise, every Ally gives 1 VP + 2 VP if their needs are met

Reorganisation Phase

If a port on the Voyage Board has no allies to choose from, add two new ones. So, if there is only 1, no new ones come out.

Face Down allies on the Voyage board are turned face up

The first player marker moves on

Game End

The game may end IF:

At least one player has built every structure in their castle

OR

There are no Edicts to fill the 3 required Active Edicts

OR

There are no cards to fill voyage spaces which needed to be filled

If none of this is true, start a new round

Scoring

Players first score any VP they accumulated throughout the game, in addition to this

1 VP for each built structure

6 VP for the player with the most built structures

3 VP for the player with the 2nd most built structures

Sell grain and stone for 2 Augustales each, then score 1 VP per 6 Augustales

The player with the most points, wins! If there's a tie, the player who built the most Great Structures wins!

Board Actions in Detail

Icons from left to right

Promote A Specialist - Move a specialist one space on one of the three tracks. You may use the ability of a space you have at least a single specialist on once per turn, which means multiple specialists on the same space give no bonus. Each space has unlimited occupancy for players to share, i.e. opponents don't block you. The exception being the final City space, which gives a one off bonus and no continuous bonus. A specialist cannot change lanes once it commences its travels. Some spaces require 1 grain to be paid in order to advance on that track. If there's an Edict on a space, this must be resolved before using the space.

Trade with Locals - Based on where your ship is currently docked, you can buy or sell resources based on the rates that port offers. Note that the ports specifically sell things and specifically buy things, i.e. you cannot sell something they are only buying and vice versa.

Build a Structure - You can build Towers, Keeps, or Walls, with each having an ordinary or a Great version. The cost to build a structure depends on where you place it, rather than what it is. Normal structures cost stone, Great Structures cost stone and Augustales. Keeps can be built in any order, whilst Walls and Towers have to be built adjacent to the opposite structure, Walls next to a Tower and vice versa, i.e. a wall with no tower either side can't be placed there. Towers give you Ally capacity, Walls give you resource capacity, Keeps give varying effects.

Summon an Ally - Based on where you ship is currently docked, you can gain one ally by paying the cost beneath it and placing it in an empty Ally slot. If you have no empty slots, you can't take this action. In addition, you may not have duplicate Allies.

Purchase an Action Card - Based on where your ship is currently docked, you may gain a new card and immediately apply its face up effects. The costs come in two forms, shown at the top right, either a cost in Augustales, or you have to get rid of a previous card to take the new card

Card Actions in Detail

Every player starts with the same 4 (X2) start cards: Gain 1 stone, gain 1 grain, gain 3 Augustales, Draw 4 cards

In addition, each colour has 2 unique cards:

Yellow - Gain 1 Grain for each of Frederick's Allies / Take 2 Augustales and perform a “Purchase an Action Card” action

Black - Gain 1 Stone for every 2 Structures in Frederick's Castle / Move your Ship anywhere on the Voyage Board, then take a Trade action

Green - Gain 1 VP for each step Frederick's Specialist has taken along the road in the Workplace Area / Using a Build action, spend exactly 2 Stone to Build a Tower (+ normal Augustales for Great Structure)

Blue - Gain 2 Augustales for each resource in Frederick's Reserve / Take a Build action, using any combination of Grain and/or Stone to pay for building costs (+ normal Augustales for Great Structure)
