Overview and Goal of the Game: One after the other, players will place tiles to create the world-famous French city of Carcassonne. As the tiles are placed, meeples may be placed as well, where they will become highwaymen, knights, monks, and farmers depending on whether they are placed on roads, cities, monasteries, or fields. Points are earned during the game, but also at the very end. After final scoring, the player with the highest score is proclaimed the winner.

Gameplay: A game of Carcassonne is played in clockwise order. Starting with the first player, the current player does the following actions in the order listed below, after which it is the next player's turn, and so and so forth.

1. Placing a tile: The player mustItalic text draw exactly 1 Land tile from a stack and place it faceup to continue the landscape. 2. Placing a meeple: The player mayItalic text place a meeple from her supply onto the tile she has just placed. 3. Scoring a feature: The player mustItalic text score any feature completed by her tile placement.
