Try to place your lumberjack and planted trees between your opponent and the available maturing trees, thus preventing him getting into position to chop a tree. Don’t forget to “stay” if by doing so you can chop adjacent trees or to plant. Relying on a protestor is a weak strategy. It doen't prevent the competitor from takiing the trees and you lose the protestor man too.
