Discard pile management is key. Try to start with larger numbers and descend or make stacks of the same number . Try not to place larger numbers onto smaller numbers.

Remember that the goal is to get rid of your pile. If you can't "make it" to your goal number it might not be worth it to play any cards. You may wish to play cards if you are trying to free up a discard pile, trying to allow yourself to draw more next time, trying to stop your opponent, or trying to play all of the cards in your hand to draw again and continue your turn. But if you are playing cards that won't lead to your goal card, always have a reason.

Always pay attention to your opponent's goal card. You don't want to inadvertently set them up for an easy play.
