When placing your borders, begin to enclose 4 hexes that you can win, then try to enclose enough additional hexes so you can still win but not too large that another set of four hexes can be subdivided and won by your opponent.

When choosing your areas to enclose, you may want to extensively subdivide any pockets of hexes where your higher numbers are concentrated. Subdivide your strong areas and place borders between them and your opponent’s stronger areas. This is a useful strategy at the outset of the game which may allow you to capture additional areas.
