Goal

Red is a tile-laying game by Néstor Romeral Andrés. Each player owns one colour: white, black or red. Build a big connected group of tiles with your colour as the border and a big connected group with your colour as the circle. Your score is the size of the first group multiplied by the size of the second.

Tiles

  • Every tile has a background (border) colour and a circle of a different colour, so there are 6 types.
  • 30 small tiles (5 of each type), each worth 1 point in a group.
  • 6 large tiles (1 of each type), each 2×2 squares and worth 2 points in a group.

Your turn

Turn order is White, Black, then Red. On your turn, pick any tile from the supply and place it on the table:

Rule Details
Grid Tiles line up with a grid of small-tile squares.
Touch a small tile Except for the first tile, every new tile must share a side with at least one small tile. Touching only at a corner is not enough.
Large tiles apart A large tile may not share a side with another large tile (corners are fine).
First turn White may not start with a large tile.

To play: tap a tile in the supply, tap a highlighted square, then press Place tile.

Game end and scoring

  • The game ends when no tile can be placed.
  • For each player, find the most valuable connected group of tiles with your border colour and the most valuable connected group with your circle colour (small tile = 1, large tile = 2). Multiply the two numbers.
  • Example: a border group worth 6 and a circle group worth 4 score 6 × 4 = 24.
  • The highest score wins. If two players tie for first, the third player wins.

Two players

All tiles are used, but only two colours belong to players; the third colour only blocks. You must play a different type of tile from the one your opponent just played, if you can. Two tiles are different if they differ in size or in colour combination.
