Overview

"Illustori"(イラストリー) is a word chain game where you name artwork cards. The artwork name that the turn player chooses can be a sentence, a quote, an onomatopoeia, or anything. All it needs for chaining is the agreement from the other players.

The language option is important. Please choose a language that all players can understand.

Game rules

  1. The first player can choose any word or phrase that represents their card, but the other players get to vote to accept or reject it.
    1. No player cards are reduced by the action.
  2. On each player's turn, they play one of the following actions:
    1. Select a card and input its name that chains the last artwork name.
    2. Select one or more cards and swap them.
  3. If they chained the artwork name, all players discuss where the name matches the artwork or not. After that, everyone (excluding the turn player) vote if they agree the naming fits.
    1. If at least half of players agreed, the word chain succeeded! The next player should chain artwork name with the succeeded one.
    2. If fewer than half of players agreed, the word chain failed. The turn player discards the played card and draws a new card. The next player should continue with the previous artwork name.
  4. Once someone places all their cards, that will be the last round. The game ends once the player who decided the first artwork name finished their turn. All players who placed all their cards win the game!

Word chain rules in English

These are the original rules for BGA that is easier than the one in the game's manual.

  1. Input artwork name's first and last letter with alphabet.
  2. The next artwork name should start with the previous artwork name's last two letters.
    ex: Moon
Next name starts "o" or "n".
    1. If you play with a prohibition rule, The next artwork name should start with the previous artwork name's last letter.
  3. The player (maybe its very rarely...) who names an artwork using a word that ends with 'xx' will get a penalty. They should discard the played card and draw a new card from the stack.

Reverse word chain rules in English

  1. Input artwork name's first and last letter with alphabet.
  2. The next artwork name should end with the previous artwork name's first letter.
    ex: Moon
    Next name ends "m".
  3. There are no penalty rules.

Reverse word chain rules in German

Most of the rules are similar to ones in English.

  1. Input artwork name's first and last letter with German alphabet (which includes umlaut letters and Eszett).
  2. The next artwork name should end with the previous artwork name's first letter.
    ex: Monat
    Next name ends "m".
  3. Umlauts and Eszett have alternatives.
    1. "ä" can be replaced with "a".
    2. "ü" can be replaced with "u".
    3. "ö" can be replaced with "o".
    4. "ß" can be replaced with "s".
  4. The player who names an artwork using a word that starts with 'q', 'x' or 'z' will get a penalty. They should discard the played card and draw a new card from the stack.

Word chain rules in Japanese

  1. Input words' first and last letter with Katakana or Hiragana.
  2. The next artwork name should start with the last letter of the last artwork name.
    ex: つきよ
    Next starts "よ".
  3. Some letters have alternatives.
    ex1: ばしゃ
    Next name starts "や".
    ex2: やかた
Next name starts "た" or "だ".
    ex3: ラッパ
    Next name starts "は", "ば", or "ぱ".
  4. If the last letter of the artwork name was chōonpu, the very last letter becomes the starting letter.
    ex: ピッチャー
    Next starts "や".
  5. The player who names an artwork using a word that ends with 'ん' will get a penalty. They should discard the played card and draw a new card from the stack.

Optional rules for prohibitions

These rules are recommended to play the rank match.

Prohibiting to repeat the same letter

  1. The player will get a penalty, calling the artwork name that starts and ends the same letter.
    ex: Antarctica
    Antarctica starts and ends "a".
  2. In English, the next artwork name should start with the previous artwork name's *last letter*.

Prohibiting to end & start past chaining letters

  1. The player will get a penalty, calling the artwork name that starts and ends the past chaining letters.
ex: New apple -> Evening -> Gown (miss!)
Gown ends with 'n' which has already been used.
  2. If all players skipped or failed to chain artwork name, the prohibited letters are cleared.
  3. If all letters are prohibited, the prohibited letters are cleared too.
  4. In English, the next artwork name should start with the previous artwork name's *last letter*.

Tips

  • There are no limitations about chaining words.
    • Any "1 word"s and sentences (ex: "He Thinks about today's examination") are accepted only if half or more players vote to agreements.
    • Vote whether you think it's OK or not.
