Overview
Stock your magic item shop with the best magical equipment and have the most Prestige (victory points) after 9 rounds.
Talent Draft
Before the game starts, all players are dealt four Talent cards. Players simultaneously draft one and pass the rest repeatedly, until each player has drafted four cards. Players then select two to play the game with and discard the other two. Talents give unique powers and also influence the players' starting dice pools.
Gameplay
Each round, all players roll their dice, and six item cards are dealt to the center board. Play starts with the player holding the anvil token and proceeds clockwise. Each player gets one turn, then the round ends: the center board is cleared, the anvil passes clockwise, and the next round starts.
Turns
During your turn, you may perform any number of actions, in any order, subject to the limitations of the action and/or your available resources. Your turn ends when you explicitly pass.
Actions
Spend A Die (limit: 4/turn)
Gain the benefit of one of your ready dice. Some dice sides give mana (the game's primary resource), others give gems, and still others have special abilities. Mana is temporary and disappears at the end of the round, gems are kept as tokens and only disappear when you use them. Once a die is spent, it moves to your 'spent' row and can't be spent again that round.
Build (limit: 1/turn)
Choose one:
- Build an Item: Choose an item card on the center board, pay its build cost (in mana), and take that card. Gems can be spent as mana for this purpose.
- Workshop cards take up space on your player board and can be activated once per round for special abilities. You can only hold four workshop cards at a time; taking a fifth will prompt you to discard an existing one.
- Store cards have immediate, single-use effects, and afterwards go to your store pile (no size limit).
- Build a Prism: Gain 1 Mana Prism (a special token that can be spent to gain any one gem). This does not cost mana but does consume your build action.
Activate a Workshop Card
Choose an upright ("charged") card in your workshop to activate. Choose any one of its unlocked abilities (see: Upgrade a Workshop Card below) and perform that ability, then turn the card sideways ("exhausted"). Some abilities consume mana, gems can be spent as mana here as well.
Upgrade a Workshop Card
Some workshop cards have multiple levels; levels can be unlocked by attaching gems to the cards. Each card specifies the gem(s) required to advance its level. Choose a card in your workshop to upgrade, then add the specified gem(s) to the card. Gems can't be removed once attached.
Activate a Talent Card
Some talent cards can be activated; check the card's description. Most talents can be activated only once per round, a couple have no limit. Some talents only react to events and can't be activated at all.
Game End
After 9 rounds, the item deck will be empty and the game ends; check the current Prestige for each player to determine the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the largest number of tokens (gems and prisms) is the winner.
Digital Implementation
There are a couple of slight differences between this and the physical game:
- In the physical game, there are 12 of each die type. In a rare few circumstances, you might not gain a die when you would otherwise be entitled to because there are none left. This implementation does not have that limit.
- In the physical game, the talents Aether Reserve and Precognition can be activated at any time, even during other players' turns. In this implementation, they can only be activated during your own turn.
The game reference cards can be viewed by clicking the "Show Player Reference" button above the center board.
The "Undo Turn" button rewinds your entire turn, with one exception: 'random' events can't be undone. For this purpose, random events are either: effects that require a dice roll (e.g. Earth Boots), or effects that involve other players (e.g. the Replica* cards). Using undo will rewind your turn up to but not including those effects. Cards that are subject to this rule have the "No Undo" tag attached to them, visible in the card's tooltip.
