== Game play ==
Players pick two potions to make. Each player chooses one potion at a time in a snake draft.

* Players start by picking two potions that they want to make.
===On Your Turn===
* Players choose their first potion going clockwise around the table, and their second potion going anti-clockwise.

* On your turn, take any marble ("ingredient") from the dispenser.
====Other Actions====
** If two marbles (or groups of marbles) of the same colour collide when falling to close the gap in a column left by taking a marble, they explode and are also taken by the player.
** This will repeat as "exploded" marbles are removed and subsequent groupings collapse.
* Exploded marbles are placed in the user's "hand".
** ''i.e. the rectangle above the flasks in the player's board.''
* One at a time, you can move these marbles to the matching colour on the potions in your board and/or to the "Pool" holding flask.
** ''The pool can hold at most three but can hold any colour.''
** If there is available space in your pool you must fill it with marbles from your hand before ending your turn.
** Any marbles left afterwards in your hand at the end of your turn are returned to the dispenser.
* When all the holes of a potion are filled, that potion is completed and it moves to your potion area, becoming worth its VP at the end of the game.

==== Other Actions ====
'''<u>Drink a Potion</u>'''

* At any time on your turn (before or after your regular marble pick), you may also:
Each potion can affect the game (mouseover to see the effect). You may drink a potion before or after choosing a marble. A potion can only be drunk once. Drinking a potion does not affect the VP earned by it.
** Drink a potion from your potion area, to activate their effect.
*** You can only drink each potion once, and it still scores VP even after being drunk.
*** Hover over to see the effect.
*** You may drink multiple potions in a turn if you have them.
** Once per turn, ask the professor for a Little Help.
*** This costs -2 VP, and lets you take any one marble from the dispenser, without triggering an explosion.

* At the very end of the turn, you must draw new potions to replace any that you completed (You cannot add marbles to these new potions until next turn).
You can drink multiple potions in a turn.

=== Skill tokens ===
'''<u>Ask for Help</u>'''

* The game is setup with ([# of players] + 2) skill tokens from the start.
Once per turn, you may "ask the professor for help". This means you can take an ingredient from the dispenser. This costs 2 VP. And it will not trigger any explosions/chain reactions.
* When you make your third potion of the same type (i.e., with the same power), or when you have made five different types of potions, take a Skill token for 4VP.
* With 5 or more players, you also gain a skill token when you complete your 10th potion.

== Game End ==
'''<u>Draw New Potions</u>'''

At the end of your turn, you must draw new potions to replace any that were completed. Ingredients cannot be added to them until your next turn.

== Skill Tokens ==

A player receives a Skill Token when they complete A) three potions of the same type B) five potions of different types. When playing with five people or more, a player who completes ten potions receives a Skill Token.

* When the pile of Skill tokens has been depleted, that round is played out and then the game ends.
Each Skill Token is worth 4 VP, but there are a limited number. The total number of Skill Tokens is equal to the number of players + two (e.g., 4 players + 2 = 6 Skill Tokens available).
* Skill tokens are scored even after they have been depleted.
* The player with the most VP points is the winner.

=== Tiebreak ===
If using "Fifth Ingredient", each player can only get the "Fifth Ingredient" Skill Token once.

* In the case of a tie, all tied players (starting from the first player in turn order) each one at a time take one marble from the dispenser to try to trigger an explosion.
== Game End ==
** The player who takes the most marbles this way is the winner.
* ''Note:'' each player may get the skill token of 'the 5th different kind of Potion' once.
** You do not get a 2nd skill token of 'the 5th different kind of Potion' after you collect the 2nd set.

== Potion effects ==
The game ends when there are no more Skill Tokens left to give. All players finish their round. The player with the most VP is the winner.

There are 8 types of potion in the base game, but only 6 are used in any particular game. These 6 are chosen at random, unless the “Simple Game (fixed starting potions)” option is used, in which case the omitted potions are always Balm of Uttermost Stickiness and Filter of Lavamancing.
In case of a tie, each tied player takes one ingredient from the dispenser. The player who takes the most ingredients through explosions is the winner.

*'''Abyssal Draft:''' Take up to 1 Ingredient of each colour from the bottom row of the Dispenser slide tracks. You can only take 1 Ingredient from each slide track.
== Potion effects ==
*'''Balm of Uttermost Stickiness:''' Take 2 or more adjacent Ingredients of the same colour from the same slide track of the Dispenser. No Explosions are triggered.
*'''Elixir of Blind Love:''' Steal all the Ingredients from 1 opponent’s Pool.

*'''Potion of Prismatic Joy:''' You can place all Ingredients (up to 3) in your flask's ingredient Pool on any holes of your incomplete Potions, regardless of their colour.
*'''Potion of Wisdom:''' Take one Ingredient of your choice from the Dispenser. No Explosions are triggered.
*'''Sands of Time:''' Activate again the effect of 1 Potion you already used.

== Variants ==
There are eight types of potions, but only six, chosen randomly, are used in a game. (The "Simple Game" omits the "Balm of Uttermost Stickiness" and "Filter of Lavamancing".)

The Ghastly Cauldron is the source for the new ingredient, Ghost Ectoplasm, but provides no new actions by itself.  Rather, some professor tiles and new potions will allow you to exchange an ingredient 1-1 for what's in the Cauldron. This is how ghostly ectoplasm gets into the game. (When a potion containing ectoplasm is completed, it will go into the hopper just like any other ingredient).
==Fifth Ingredient (variant)==

====Ghost Ectoplasm====
A new ingredient, Ghost Ectoplasm, can be found in the Ghastly Cauldron. To get Ghost Ectoplasm, you must exchange one of your other ingredients. It can be used as any color, both in explosions and as a potion ingredient. When a potion containing Ghost Ectoplasm is completed, the Ghost Ectoplasm goes into the dispenser.
* Ghost Ectoplasm is added as an extra ingredient. It is found in the Ghastly Cauldron.
* This ingredient can be used as any colour, both for explosions and for brewing.
* When you exchange an ingredient with the Ghastly Cauldron, you must take a marble from it (Ghost Ectoplasm if possible) and put another marble in its place. After that, gain 1 reward token.

====New Potions====

Gameplay

Players pick two potions to make. Each player chooses one potion at a time in a snake draft.

On Your Turn

  1. Take any color "ingredient" (marble) from the dispenser
    • If two of the same-colored ingredients (or groups of ingredients) collide when closing the gap, they "explode" and are also taken by the player.
    • This can cause a chain reaction as "exploded" ingredients are removed and subsequent groupings collapse.
  2. All ingredient marbles, both taken and exploded, are placed in the user's "hand" (the rectangle above the flasks on the player's board).
  3. Move each ingredient to the matching color on the potions and/or to the flask to hold them for later.
    • The flask holds three ingredients max of any color
    • Any ingredients not put into a potion must be put into a flask. If the flask is full, the ingredients are put back into the dispenser.
  4. When a potion has all its ingredients, it is completed and moved to the usable potion area.

Other Actions

Drink a Potion

Each potion can affect the game (mouseover to see the effect). You may drink a potion before or after choosing a marble. A potion can only be drunk once. Drinking a potion does not affect the VP earned by it.

You can drink multiple potions in a turn.

Ask for Help

Once per turn, you may "ask the professor for help". This means you can take an ingredient from the dispenser. This costs 2 VP. And it will not trigger any explosions/chain reactions.

Draw New Potions

At the end of your turn, you must draw new potions to replace any that were completed. Ingredients cannot be added to them until your next turn.

Skill Tokens

A player receives a Skill Token when they complete A) three potions of the same type B) five potions of different types. When playing with five people or more, a player who completes ten potions receives a Skill Token.

Each Skill Token is worth 4 VP, but there are a limited number. The total number of Skill Tokens is equal to the number of players + two (e.g., 4 players + 2 = 6 Skill Tokens available).

If using "Fifth Ingredient", each player can only get the "Fifth Ingredient" Skill Token once.

Game End

The game ends when there are no more Skill Tokens left to give. All players finish their round. The player with the most VP is the winner.

In case of a tie, each tied player takes one ingredient from the dispenser. The player who takes the most ingredients through explosions is the winner.

Potion effects

There are eight types of potions, but only six, chosen randomly, are used in a game. (The "Simple Game" omits the "Balm of Uttermost Stickiness" and "Filter of Lavamancing".)

  • Abyssal Draft: Take up to 1 Ingredient of each colour from the bottom row of the Dispenser slide tracks. You can only take 1 Ingredient from each slide track.
  • Balm of Uttermost Stickiness: Take 2 or more adjacent Ingredients of the same colour from the same slide track of the Dispenser. No Explosions are triggered.
  • Elixir of Blind Love: Steal all the Ingredients from 1 opponent’s Pool.
  • Filter of Lavamancing: Discard up to 5 Ingredients of 1 colour from the same slide track of the Dispenser back into the tank. Explosions do not trigger.
  • Potion of Magnetical Attraction: Take 2 adjacent Ingredients of different colours from the same slide track of the Dispenser. Explosions do not trigger.
  • Potion of Prismatic Joy: Place up to 3 ingredients from your flask on any incomplete Potions, regardless of color.
  • Potion of Wisdom: Take one ingredient of your choice from the Dispenser. Explosions do not trigger.

  • Fulminating Serum: (variant) Discard 2 ingredients on the same track. They go back into the Dispenser. Explosions do not trigger.

Fifth Ingredient (variant)

A new ingredient, Ghost Ectoplasm, can be found in the Ghastly Cauldron. To get Ghost Ectoplasm, you must exchange one of your other ingredients. It can be used as any color, both in explosions and as a potion ingredient. When a potion containing Ghost Ectoplasm is completed, the Ghost Ectoplasm goes into the dispenser.

New Potions

  • Brew of Feather Touch: Take 2 or more ingredients of the same color from the same dispenser row. Explosions are not triggered.
  • Chameleonic Varnish: All ingredients of one color are changed to another color, except for Ghost Ectoplasm.
  • Dram of Poltergeist Sweat: Steal 1 ingredient from an opponent's pool, then exchange it in the Ghastly Cauldron.
  • Ghastly Concoction: Exchange an ingredient in your hand with one in the Ghastly Cauldron.

Professor Tiles

At the start of the game, each player receives a "Professor Tile" at random, which has an ongoing effect during the game.

  • Albedus Humblescore: Discard 2 ingredients of the same color from your hand to use one "Ask for Help" token.
  • Antiqua Thriftymind: Exchange one ingredient from the flask with one in the Ghastly Cauldron if your flask is full at the end of your turn.
  • Gideon Prissymann: Receive 1 Scolding Token if you finish your turn with one or more ingredients still in hand.

  • Shi Zan Shuimo: An "Ask for Help" token can be used to activate the effect of a potion that has already been drunk.

Note: The effect of Gideon Prissymann in BGA is different from the physical game.

Anxiogenous O’Clockitt is not used in the BGA version.

Sixth Student (variant)

Mandragora Leaves

A new ingredient, Mandragora Leaves, is added to the dispenser. They are their own color and treated as such during explosions. Mandragora Leaves can be used in a potion instead of a different color, but all the ingredients of that layer must be Mandragora Leaves.

New Potions

  • Concentrate of Selfishness: Steal 1 ingredient from each opponent's flask.
  • Generosity Confection: For each player, take 1 ingredient from the dispenser's leftmost or rightmost side. Then give 1 ingredient to each player. If a player's flask is full, discard the ingredient instead.
