Objective

Build the most prosperous Irish county by strategically placing landscape tiles. Players earn points through territory expansion, resource management, and various bonuses. The player with the highest total score after 12 rounds wins.

Components & Key Terms

  • Landscape Tiles: Feature various symbols, including sheep, ruins, distilleries, bogs, and meadows.
  • The Wheel: Determines which of the five offer stacks players must choose from each round.
  • Bonus Tiles: Special rewards earned by connecting at least two bog symbols or herding the biggest flock of sheep.

Gameplay

The game lasts 12 rounds (reduced to 10 rounds in a 5-player game). Each round consists of two main steps and a check:

  1. Drafting Tiles: The active player spins the wheel. The pointer indicates the specific stack from which players must select their tile: the same coat of arms appears on your starting tile!
  2. Placing Tiles: The selected tile must be placed adjacent to the starting tile or a previously placed tile. You may expand in any direction. However, you may not rearrange the landscape tiles in your display once they are placed, nor are they supposed to overlap.
  3. Checking for majority of sheep: On BGA, this is provided automatically. The bonus marker for the biggest herd might move on to the next player. In case of the tie,

Symbol Resolutions

  • Distilleries: When a distillery is placed adjacent to a grain field (or vice versa), you produce whiskey and advance your barrel one step on the track. This progress can also grant you additional bonus sheep.
  • Ruins: Creating a straight row of three ruins allows you to activate bonus "filler" tiles during end-game scoring.
  • Sheep I: Sheep form flocks. Only your largest continuous flock will score points at the end of the game. If you are shepard of the biggest flock at the table, you will gain an extra bonus marker (= plus 5 sheep).
  • Sheep II: Some landscape tiles and moving forward on the Whisky track will provide you with a bonus sheep. This has to be placed immediately on a free meadow. If your county holds no free space, you will not get that bonus sheep. IRL this will be wooden sheep. Fancy that.
  • Bogs: Placing two bogs adjacently are considered protected sites awarding you a 1x1 bonus tile. This can hold anything from meadow to stone circle and has to be placed immediately. Comes in handy to fill gaps. Please note: Adding more bogs to a protected site will not bring any reward - we don't want sheep to get lost here.
  • Stone Circles: Stone circle are sacred areas and come with a value of 1-4 points.

End of Game & Scoring

After the final round, players place any towers to fill gaps and calculate their scores based on the following:

  • Area: Score your largest rectangular, gapless area of all fields (Length x Width) of your county.
  • Sheep: 1 point per sheep in your largest continuous flock. The player with the overall largest flock receives a +5 point bonus.
  • Exploration: A 5-point bonus is awarded if you entirely surround your starting county tile. Yes, this means also the corner tiles.
  • Whiskey: Points are awarded based on your barrel’s final position on the whiskey scale.
  • Stone Circles: Each stone circle scores between 1 and 4 points.

The player with the highest total score is declared the winner.
