Make sure to pay attention to what the other players are doing.

Remember, that every time you take an action, you're not taking an action somewhere else.
Watching others also help you learning.

Always try to place the maximum amount of assistants (normally 3 or 4 with the related technology)...
... unless it is for a high reward, then you could of course place 2 assistants in the same area (i.e. beating someone in getting a power 5 bonus or in getting a power technology);
Be careful to never run out of assistants;
Technologies can be very powerful, always check what is available;
Do not be afraid of having few points at the beginning: matches usually last enough, so if you gather resources and technologies, you catch up very quickly.
