*Collect as much bamboo as you can, even if you don't currently have a card that requires the color you can get. Bamboo with the wrong color is better than nothing.
The chance of getting a certain plot color is not the same for all tiles. There are:
*Try to have 5 objective cards in your hand at all times; this means your first two moves should be obtaining an objective card, and collecting an irrigation channel.
 
*Watch the moves your opponent is making, and if it seems apparent they are trying to fulfill a specific objective, do your best to sabotage or delay their fulfillment.

*When you have the question mark weather card in the early stages, the best card to pick is the improvement, if it allows your to obtain a water tile.
