== Minimum System Requirements ==
==Overview==
This game requires a vaguely modern web browser (2017 or newer: Google Chrome 61+, Firefox 60+, Edge 79+, or Safari 11+). A computer [https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/windows/end-of-windows-xp-support#:~:text=After%2012%20years%2C%20support%20for,to%20a%20modern%20operating%20system. still running Windows XP] is far too old, for example. If you meet the minimum requirements and cannot load the game, please [https://boardgamearena.com/bugs?game=1354 use the bug reporting system] to vote/file a report. If another player at your table cannot load the game, please kindly agree to abandon without penalty.

This game works well on mobile devices, but the small screen size means you'll end up choosing between larger cards that are easier to read or smaller cards that are easier to rearrange. A user preference is available (under the top-right corner menu) to adjust the card size on mobile devices.
As an aspiring 19th-century novelist, you're paid by the word to complete romance, mystery, adventure, and horror novels, earning prestige in the process. Earn enough to complete your masterpiece and be recognized as the finest novelist of the age!

== How To Play ==
Build your deck of letters to make words. Use the words to buy new letters from different genres.

Hardback is a deck-building word game. Each player starts with their own deck of 10 Starter cards: The 8 letters (A, E, I, L, N, R, S, T) plus 2 random letters from the set (B, C, D, G, H, M, O, P, U, Y). Each player has their own draw and discard piles.
== Game Components ==

There are 5 genres: Starter (gray), Adventure (yellow), Horror (green), Mystery (blue), Romance (red). A colored bar in the player panel displays the current composition of each player's deck.
Each player starts with a deck of 10 cards: 8 regular letters worth 1¢ each and 2 random "prestige" letters worth 1 ''point'' each. A colored bar in the player panel displays the current composition of each player's deck.

=== Spell A Word ===
In the middle is the Offer Row, where you can purchase cards to add to your deck.

Each round you receive a hand of 5 cards from your deck. Use these cards (and any '''Timeless Classics''', if available) to spell a word. When your turn begins, your hand of cards automatically move into the current word area. Simply drag and drop the cards to rearrange them. You're not required to use all your cards and can remove cards from your word by clicking the card or dragging it up to your hand area. If you change your mind, you can re-add a removed card by clicking it (adds to the end of your word) or dragging it down to your word in the proper position.
Each player can also gain '''Ink''' tokens and '''Remover''' tokens. One Ink costs 1¢. You can use Ink to draw an extra card from your deck when forming a word (1 Ink per card). But cards drawn with Ink ''must be used'' in your word and they cannot be made wild. If you cannot make a word using all your cards drawn with Ink, you must forfeit your turn. You can also trade 3 Ink tokens for 1¢.

Any card can be made wild, but wild cards do not provide any benefits. Click '''WILD''' below a card to flip it face-down and assign any letter by clicking or typing the letter. If you change your mind, click '''RESET''' below a wild card to flip it face-up.
Remover tokens let you remove the "Ink" status on a card, turning it into a normal card. Remover can only be gained by playing certain cards--it cannot be purchased.

Any cards left in your hand are discarded. You cannot save cards from one round to the next. If you can't spell a word, you may choose to skip your turn.
====Card Anatomy====

=== Resolve Card Benefits ===

The face-up cards in your word provide various benefits. Coins (¢) allow you to purchase new cards and ink. Points (★) increase your final score. Abilities alter the state of play in special ways.
Each card has the following attributes:

Benefits listed ''above the line, in black'' are Basic Benefits. You gain all of these every time you use the card face-up to spell a word.
<ul class="bulletlist" style="margin:1em 0;padding-inline-start:40px;">
  <li>'''Letter:''' Represents the letter used in the word you must spell.</li>
  <li>'''Genre:''' The icon and color of the card indicate its genre: Adventure, Romance, Mystery, or Horror.</li>
  <li>'''Basic Benefits:''' Items above the line in the description indicate the money, points, or abilities gained from playing the card.</li>
  <li>'''Genre Benefits:''' Items below the line in the description indicate special Genre benefits. These are only activated if you use multiple cards of the same Genre in the same word.</li>
  <li>'''Cost:''' How many ¢ needed to purchase the card.</li>
</ul>

• Benefits listed ''below the line, in color'' are Genre Benefits. You gain all of these if you have at least one other card of the same genre (color) in play (in your word or in the '''Timeless Classics''' area).
'''<u>Timeless Classics</u>'''

Board Game Arena automatically resolves benefits for you in an optimal order: <span style="color: blue; font-style: italic">[ ALPHA LIMITATION: The current timing of the Mystery N special ability may be suboptimal. ]</span>
Cards turned sideways are ''Timeless Classics''. These cards are not discarded at the end of your turn, but remain in the play area. You gain the benefits from this card whether or not you include it in your word.

• Uncover adjacent cards<br>
Any player can use a Timeless Classic, but does not gain the benefits (basic or genre) from it. If another player uses it, the Timeless Classic card is discarded.
• Double adjacent cards<br>
• Earn coins and points<br>
• Special abilities (Adventure O, Horror H, Mystery N, Romance R)<br>
• Trash cards from your word<br>
• Trash cards from your discard pile<br>
• Benefits offering a choice (coins or prestige, ink or remover)<br>
• Jail or trash cards from the offer row

=== Flush Offer Row ===
Timeless Classics cannot be used as a wild card.

In certain situations, you can trash all 7 cards in the offer row (removing them from the game) and draw 7 new cards. You will be prompted to do this once per turn, before purchasing, if either conditions is met:
'''<u>Other Mechanics</u>'''

• At least 4 cards in the offer row cost 6¢ or more
Trash: Remove a card from your discard pile. This card is removed from the game and does not go back into your deck when it runs out.

• At least 4 cards in the offer row are the same genre (color)
Flush Offer Row: If 4 or more cards in the offer row are either the same genre (color) or cost 6¢ or more, you may flush the offer row. All seven cards in the offer row are discarded and replaced with seven new cards. This option is not available during cooperative games.

=== Purchase ===
==Gameplay==

You can purchase ink and cards from the offer row using the coins you earned this turn.
Each turn has four phases: ''spell a word'', ''discard unused cards'', ''resolve card benefits'', and ''purchase cards and Ink''. Some optional actions are also available after a player's turn.

Each card's cost is indicated in the price tag in the top-left corner. Click a card to purchase it. Note that some Adventure (yellow) cards also indicate a number of points on the price tag. This is not a cost, but a one-time benefit you ''earn'' when purchasing the card.
====Phase 1: Spell a Word====

Ink costs 1¢. Any coins you do not spend are automatically converted to ink at the end of your turn. You cannot save coins from one turn to the next.
When your turn begins, your cards move into your play area. '''Drag and drop''' the cards to rearrange them or remove them (you can also remove them by clicking "Remove" on the card's bottom). Removed cards can be re-added by clicking or dragging down to your word.

It is possible to convert ink earned on previous turns back to coins at a reduced rate (3 ink for 1¢). Board Game Arena only presents this option when it would allow you to purchase something that you otherwise couldn't afford.
Click "WILD" on any card to use it as a letter of your choice. Making a card Wild cancels any benefits it would provide. If you change your mind, you can click "UNCOVER" to flip it back to its normal face. You can also use Ink to "press your luck" and draw additional cards from your deck. But any cards drawn with Ink must be used in your word (unless Remover is applied to them).

=== Timeless Classics ===
All cards in your hand and used to spell the word are discarded at the end of your turn. Cards are not saved from one round to the next.

All cards from your word are discarded at the end of your turn, except Timeless Classics.
If you can't spell a word, you may forfeit your turn.

There are 12 Timeless Classic cards, which are printed sideways. When you spell a word using a face-up Timeless Classic card, it stays in play at the end of your turn. On subsequent turns, you continue to gain the benefits of the card ''whether or not you use it in your word''!
====Phase 2: Gain Card Benefits====

Your Timeless Classic card stays in play until another player uses it in their word, which sends it to your discard pile. Any player can use any active Timeless Classic when spelling a word, no matter which player owns the card, but these cards cannot be made wild.
Gain all the basic benefits of cards used in your word. If you played 2 or more cards belonging to the same genre (color), you also gain the Genre Benefits from those cards. Hover your mouse over the benefit section of the card to see more information.

When you use another player's Timeless Classic card, you <u>do not</u> get any benefits and its genre <u>does not</u> count towards triggering other genre benefits in your word. Astute authors will use other players' Timeless Classic cards anyway in order to discard the card.
Coins (¢) allow you to purchase new cards and ink. Points (★) increase your score.

After your turn is complete, you may immediately begin working on your next word, including using any previously obtained ink and remover. At any time before you spell a word, even during another player's turn, you can draw additional cards from your draw pile by spending 1 ink per card. Inked cards '''must''' be used in your next word and cannot be made wild.
====Phase 3: Purchase New Cards and Ink====

Remover cancels ink. You can spend 1 remover to convert an inked card back to a normal card, meaning you are no longer required to use it in your word. Remover can only be obtained by playing certain cards; it cannot be purchased.
With the money earned from the cards in your hand, you may purchase cards in the offer row. Price is indicated in the upper left corner. Note that some cards also have a points (★) number below the price, which indicates points you ''gain'' from purchasing the card. (You do not pay points for a card.)

<b>Pressing your luck with ink is the only way to make words longer than 5 letters.</b> If you push your luck too far and can't form a word with all inked cards, you must skip your turn.
You can also buy Ink tokens for 1¢ each. Any ¢ not spent at the end of this phase is converted to Ink at the end of your turn. ¢ are not saved from one turn to the next.

=== Game End ===
You can exchange 3 Ink for 1¢ to help you buy more letters. (Board Game Arena only presents this option if you could purchase something with this increase.)

When a player reaches 60 points, the game ends at the conclusion of the current round (all players receive the same number of turns). The player with the most points is the winner and the finest author of the age! In the case of a tie, the player with the most ink remaining wins the game.
If the Offer Row does not change at the end of your turn, the oldest card in the Offer Row (indicated by a clock) is trashed.

=== Literary Awards ===
=== Literary Awards ===
Literary Awards provide bonus points to the player who spells the longest word of the game, encouraging players to compete more directly and spell longer words.

The first player to spell a word with 7 or more letters claims the appropriate award. The first player to subsequently spell a longer word claims the appropriate award and discards all lower awards. In this way, only one award is ever in play at a time. Whichever player is holding the award at the end of the game earns the stated number of points. Because these points are not scored immediately, they do not count towards the 60 point threshold needed to end the game.
Literary Awards are given to players who spell longer words (7-12 letters) and are worth bonus points at the end of the game. There are six awards--one for each potential word length (7,8,9,10,11,12). When a player spells a word of that length, he/she receives the Literary Award for that length and all awards with a lower length are removed from the game (including those belonging to other players). This means only one player will have a Literary Award at the end of the game (the player who spelled the longest word).

For example, Alice spells a 7-letter word. She gains the 7-letter Literary Award (worth 5 points). Bob spells a 10-letter word. He gains the 10-letter Literary Award. All cards of lower value, including Alice's, are removed from the game.

Players can purchase points through adverts during the Purchase phase. Each player has an advert tracker and uses it to buy points. Each advert can only be purchased once and must be purchased in the order listed. Multiple adverts can be bought during your turn, as long as they are in order.

For example, Alice purchases the Advert for 6¢. 3 points are added to her score. The 6¢ slot is marked on her Advert tracker card, making the next Advert she can purchase cost 9¢.

=== Cooperative Anthology & Solo Mode ===
Players are not able to flush the Offer Row. Players cannot win multiple Literary Awards (only one player can have an award).

In this challenging co-op variant, 1 - 4 players win or lose together against archrival Penny Dreadful. The following rule changes apply:
Any player can use Timeless Classic cards without being discarded. However, if a new card of the same genre is added to the Offer Row during your turn or Penny Dreadful's next turn, the Timeless Classic card is discarded.

Penny Dreadful takes a turn after each player. She purchases the oldest (right-most) card in the offer row and earns points equal to the card's cost.
The game ends when one side (either the players or Penny Dreadful) earns the goal total, which is 60 points per human player (i.e., 180 points for a three-player game). If the players beat Penny Dreadful, their
collected writings become instant classics. However, if Penny Dreadful wins, the players suffer the shame of seeing Penny's name on the best-seller list.

• In the ''Cooperative Anthology With Signature Genre'' variant, Penny Dreadful also earns points based on the condition displayed in her player panel.
This mode can also be played solo.

• Players can never flush the offer row.
'''<u>Penny Dreadful's Signature Genre</u>'''

• Any player can use your Timeless Classic cards without discarding them. Instead, your Timeless Classic cards are discarded if a card of the same genre is added to the offer row at any time during your turn or Penny Dreadful's turn immediately following your turn.
You can choose a signature genre to give Penny Dreadful's turn an additional effect.

• The game is played to a final score of 60 points per human player (for example, play to 180 points with 3 players). The game ends immediately when one side - either the players or Penny Dreadful - earns enough points. The players win if they <b>beat</b> Penny's score (tying with Penny is a loss).

Overview

As an aspiring 19th-century novelist, you're paid by the word to complete romance, mystery, adventure, and horror novels, earning prestige in the process. Earn enough to complete your masterpiece and be recognized as the finest novelist of the age!

Build your deck of letters to make words. Use the words to buy new letters from different genres.

Game Components

Each player starts with a deck of 10 cards: 8 regular letters worth 1¢ each and 2 random "prestige" letters worth 1 point each. A colored bar in the player panel displays the current composition of each player's deck.

In the middle is the Offer Row, where you can purchase cards to add to your deck.

Each player can also gain Ink tokens and Remover tokens. One Ink costs 1¢. You can use Ink to draw an extra card from your deck when forming a word (1 Ink per card). But cards drawn with Ink must be used in your word and they cannot be made wild. If you cannot make a word using all your cards drawn with Ink, you must forfeit your turn. You can also trade 3 Ink tokens for 1¢.

Remover tokens let you remove the "Ink" status on a card, turning it into a normal card. Remover can only be gained by playing certain cards--it cannot be purchased.

Card Anatomy

Hardback cardAnatomy.png

Each card has the following attributes:

  • Letter: Represents the letter used in the word you must spell.
  • Genre: The icon and color of the card indicate its genre: Adventure, Romance, Mystery, or Horror.
  • Basic Benefits: Items above the line in the description indicate the money, points, or abilities gained from playing the card.
  • Genre Benefits: Items below the line in the description indicate special Genre benefits. These are only activated if you use multiple cards of the same Genre in the same word.
  • Cost: How many ¢ needed to purchase the card.

Timeless Classics

Cards turned sideways are Timeless Classics. These cards are not discarded at the end of your turn, but remain in the play area. You gain the benefits from this card whether or not you include it in your word.

Any player can use a Timeless Classic, but does not gain the benefits (basic or genre) from it. If another player uses it, the Timeless Classic card is discarded.

Timeless Classics cannot be used as a wild card.

Other Mechanics

Trash: Remove a card from your discard pile. This card is removed from the game and does not go back into your deck when it runs out.

Flush Offer Row: If 4 or more cards in the offer row are either the same genre (color) or cost 6¢ or more, you may flush the offer row. All seven cards in the offer row are discarded and replaced with seven new cards. This option is not available during cooperative games.

Gameplay

Each turn has four phases: spell a word, discard unused cards, resolve card benefits, and purchase cards and Ink. Some optional actions are also available after a player's turn.

Phase 1: Spell a Word

When your turn begins, your cards move into your play area. Drag and drop the cards to rearrange them or remove them (you can also remove them by clicking "Remove" on the card's bottom). Removed cards can be re-added by clicking or dragging down to your word.

All cards in your hand and used to spell the word are discarded at the end of your turn. Cards are not saved from one round to the next.

If you can't spell a word, you may forfeit your turn.

Phase 2: Gain Card Benefits

Gain all the basic benefits of cards used in your word. If you played 2 or more cards belonging to the same genre (color), you also gain the Genre Benefits from those cards. Hover your mouse over the benefit section of the card to see more information.

Coins (¢) allow you to purchase new cards and ink. Points (★) increase your score.

Genre Benefits
Ability Name Genre Description
Trash Adventure Trash the card with this benefit to gain money or points.
Recover Horror Gain 1 Ink or 1 Remover.
Jail Mystery Reserve or remove a card from the Offer Row. If you reserve it, you (and only you) may purchase it later. A player can only keep one card in reserve at a time.
Uncover Mystery Flip an adjacent wild card back to its face-up card. You receive its benefits.
Double Romance Double the coin and points earned from the basic benefits of an adjacent card. The card's numbers will highlight in yellow to indicate the change. This does not apply to genre benefits or abilities. A second "Double" only adds to the total, not multiplies.
Dump Romance Trash a card (remove it from your discard pile) to gain 1¢.
Preview Romance Draw three cards from your deck. Choose to return or discard each card drawn this way.

Phase 3: Purchase New Cards and Ink

With the money earned from the cards in your hand, you may purchase cards in the offer row. Price is indicated in the upper left corner. Note that some cards also have a points (★) number below the price, which indicates points you gain from purchasing the card. (You do not pay points for a card.)

You can also buy Ink tokens for 1¢ each. Any ¢ not spent at the end of this phase is converted to Ink at the end of your turn. ¢ are not saved from one turn to the next.

You can exchange 3 Ink for 1¢ to help you buy more letters. (Board Game Arena only presents this option if you could purchase something with this increase.)

If the Offer Row does not change at the end of your turn, the oldest card in the Offer Row (indicated by a clock) is trashed.

Game End

When a player reaches 60 points, the round completes so all players have the same number of turns. The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most remaining Ink wins the game.

Upper Right: Your discard pile is displayed, along with the letters in that pile. Above this are buttons for "LOOKUP" (look up a word in the dictionary), "UNCOVER ALL" (flip all the cards in your hand face-up), and ways to arrange your cards (alphabetical, genre, or shuffle).

The Offer Row has similar options to be arranged alphabetically, by price, by genre, or by time in the Offer Row (youngest to oldest).

Variants

Literary Awards

The points are not added to your score until the end of the game.

Adverts

Players can purchase points through adverts during the Purchase phase. Each player has an advert tracker and uses it to buy points. Each advert can only be purchased once and must be purchased in the order listed. Multiple adverts can be bought during your turn, as long as they are in order.

For example, Alice purchases the Advert for 6¢. 3 points are added to her score. The 6¢ slot is marked on her Advert tracker card, making the next Advert she can purchase cost 9¢.

These points are immediately added to your score.

Cooperative Anthology

Players work together to defeat their archrival, Penny Dreadful.

The players collectively use one score tracker, and Penny Dreadful uses the other. Unlike the competitive game, laps around the score tracker are marked.

Each player plays as normal, but after each player's turn, Penny Dreadful purchases the oldest (rightmost) card and earns points equal to its cost.

Players are not able to flush the Offer Row. Players cannot win multiple Literary Awards (only one player can have an award).

Any player can use Timeless Classic cards without being discarded. However, if a new card of the same genre is added to the Offer Row during your turn or Penny Dreadful's next turn, the Timeless Classic card is discarded.

The game ends when one side (either the players or Penny Dreadful) earns the goal total, which is 60 points per human player (i.e., 180 points for a three-player game). If the players beat Penny Dreadful, their collected writings become instant classics. However, if Penny Dreadful wins, the players suffer the shame of seeing Penny's name on the best-seller list.

This mode can also be played solo.

Penny Dreadful's Signature Genre

You can choose a signature genre to give Penny Dreadful's turn an additional effect.

  • Adventure: While an adventure card is in the Offer Row, Penny receives 1 point for each card purchased by any player.
  • Horror: While a horror card is in the Offer Row, Penny receives 1 point for each Ink used by any player.
  • Mystery: When Penny removes a Mystery card from the Offer Row, she also removes the lowest-priced card in the Offer Row. (Points are not earned from this second card).
  • Romance: When Penny removes a Romance card from the Offer Row, she gains double the Prestige points for that card.
