VektoRace is a game of vectors. Vectors are made up of distance and direction.
DISTANCE
The distance your car moves is determined by the gear chosen at the end of the prior turn. Gear 1 is equal to one car length. When you leapfrog your car over gear 1, you will move 2 (1+1) car lengths forward. When you leapfrog over gear 2, you will move forward 3 (2+1) car lengths forward. Gears 3, 4, 5 move you forward 4, 5, 6 car lengths forward, respectively. Nitro tokens can be used to boost this forward movement 1, 2, 3, or 4. The cost to boost 1, 2, 3, or 4 is always one nitro token. The fastest way to travel is to use the highest gear (5) and highest boost (4) possible. However, the faster you go, the less your are able to change the direction of your car and successfully navigate the turns.
DIRECTION
The direction of movement is determined by the direction your car is facing. It has exactly 8 directions it can possibly face (North, South, East, West, and NW, NE, SW, SE). You will never face a different direction than these 8 cardinal directions. Each turn you can maintain your direction or turn 45 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise - never more. On the long straight portions of the track, simply going as fast as possible is best. The turns are the tricky parts of the race. The most efficient way to circumnavigate the track is to stay close to the inside lane. However, each 90 degree turn will require two 45 degree turns on your part, so you are inevitably going to move towards the outer lanes as you speed around the corners. Winning racers will minimize the amount of time they spend in the outer lanes. This can be done by turning your car 45 degrees a little before you reach the corner. If you do it right, you'll get the edge on your opponents - but if you turn 45 degrees too early, it may be impossible to play your planned gear template. In this case, you will be forced to perform an emergency downshift and jam on the brakes.
ATTACKS
This can get even more convoluted an complicated as the turns become more crowded with additional cars. The car in the lead has no ability to attack. All of the cars behind should be doing their best to attack the lead car. Performing shunting attacks on a car in front of yours is one way for you to make it difficult for them to hold the inside lane. When they take the turn wider than ideal, you can take the inside lane and pass them. Similarly, you can make a pushing attack in an attempt to force the car in front of you to make the turn wider than they'd like to. Once they do, you can move inside and pass them. The slingshot pass is a straightforward way to pass the car in front of you.
SUMMARY
Go as fast as possible. Plan out your route to stay near the inside lane as much as possible.
