Plantopia: Potato's Plant Planet

Plantopia is a simultaneous-play card game for 2–5 players. Conquer the weather and grow the craziest garden to score the most Rainbow Leaves (points).

Goal

Score the most Rainbow Leaves. The game ends immediately after the Weather Phase in which any player has 4 Adult plants (at any level) in their garden.

Key terms

  • Plant families — every plant is a Tree, Cactus, or Flower.
  • Baby plant / Adult plant — plants are either Babies or Adults. An Adult plant is also called a Treevolved plant.
  • Garden — your row of up to 5 Planters; each Planter holds one plant.
  • Level — plants start at Level 0 and grow to a maximum of Level 3. A plant that reaches Level 3 leaves its Planter (freeing the slot) and is set aside; there is no limit on the number of Level 3 plants.

Setup

  • Each player gets 5 Planters (their Garden) and a starting hand of 6 Plant Cards. You may discard all 6 and redraw once.
  • Each player takes the 3 Weather Cards showing their character; the Weather Cards of any unused characters are shuffled into a shared Weather Deck.
  • Set the Bonus Weather Cards aside. If playing with character powers, deal one Character Power to each player and apply its setup effect.

Flow of the game

There are no turns — all players act simultaneously each phase, then wait for everyone before moving on together. The game alternates the Planting Phase and the Weather Phase until a player has 4 Adult plants.

Planting Phase

First, every player draws 1 card (hand size is unlimited). Then each player chooses one of the following:

Option 1: Plant (one card only)

Pay a card's cost (the number in its top-left) and place it in your Garden:

  • Baby plant — pay the cost in cards from your hand (to the discard pile), then place the Baby on an empty Planter. You cannot plant a Baby if all 5 Planters are full.
  • Adult plant — pay by sacrificing a Baby plant from your Garden of the required family and minimum Level (discard it). The Baby "grows up" into the Adult.

Plants enter at Level 0. Some plants have an immediate effect when planted — resolve it right away. When a plant reaches Level 3, remove it from its Planter and set it aside (that Planter is free again).

Option 2: Grow (any number of plants)

Instead of planting, grow any number of plants in your Garden by 1 Level each. For each plant, pay its cost (the same top-left number) in cards from your hand as fertilizer. A plant may only be grown by 1 Level per Planting Phase.

Option 3: Draw 5, keep 2

Draw 5 cards and discard 3 of them (keeping 2).

Weather Phase

Step 1: Choose a Weather Card

Shuffle the Weather Deck and reveal cards face-up based on the player count:

  • 2 players: 2 face-up, 1 face-down
  • 3 players: 1 face-up, 1 face-down
  • 4 players: 1 face-up

Then every player secretly plays 1 Weather Card from their hand face-down.

Step 2: Reveal

All players reveal their Weather Cards (including the face-down deck cards). There are always 5 Weather Cards in total, whatever the player count. Players may now play any Bonus Weather Cards — these affect only the player who plays them, then return to the stock.

Step 3: Grow plants

Each plant grows if its growth condition (shown at the top of the card) appears in the revealed Weather. If the condition is present multiple times, the plant grows that many Levels (e.g. condition "Rain + Sun" with 2 Rain and 2 Sun showing → grow 2 Levels). Finally, each player takes back the Weather Card showing their own character.

End of the game & Scoring

If a player has 4 Adult plants in their Garden at the end of a Planting Phase, play one final Weather Phase, then the game ends. Total up the scores.

Each plant scores its Plant Score + Bonus Score:

  • Plant Score — the leaves shown in its top-right, multiplied by its Level (e.g. 3 leaves × Level 2 = 6 points).
  • Bonus Score — most Adult plants list a bonus-scoring condition at the bottom; score these separately.

The player with the most points is the Champion Gardener of Plantopia.

  • Tiebreakers: most Adult plants → then most cards left in hand → then all tied players share the win.

Character Powers

  • Potato — start with 4 extra cards.
  • Mushroom — start with 1 Bonus Weather Card of each type.
  • Carrot — when you plant an Adult plant, grow a Baby plant by 1 Level.
  • Tomato — when you plant a Baby plant, grow a matching-family Adult plant by 1 Level.
  • Banana — discard 2 Baby plants from your hand to gain 1 extra planting action (max once per round).
