Try to win the game as quickly as possible.

Any cards you play can (and probably will) be used against you. Inexperienced players are often so preoccupied with whether or not they can play a card, they don’t stop to think if they should play it.

Sometimes it can be beneficial to intentionally take the 3-card penalty. There are at least two reasons why you might want this:

  • To get a specific card, if you think you can not win without it.
  • To deplete the deck and end the game in a tie.

It is sometimes possible to "trap" an opponent's card. For example, suppose you have ♥♥♣♣♦♦♠♠ in your hand, but you don't have ♥. Any run that includes ♥ would require a ♥, and any set that includes ♥ would require another king. So if your opponent has one of the two ♥, they can never play it, so they can never win! (but they can still tie)
