Don't be discouraged by Penny's early lead. Give yourself time to build your engine by focusing on cards that provide coins in the beginning. This will let you buy the cards you need and control what is available to Penny.
 
Don't buy the cheap cards, especially in the beginning. Unless the card has benefits you <i>really</i> want, it's much better to leave it for Penny and take ink instead.
