''2-5 players, 8+, 5 minutes per player''

== Components ==

* 132 cards, numbered 1 to 6: 20×1, 20×2, 20×3, 22×4, 24×5, 26×6

== Setup ==

# Shuffle the cards thoroughly.
# Draw 6 cards and put them in a '''face up row''' in the middle of the table.
# Deal every player a '''hand of 6''' cards.
# Form a face down '''draw pile''' from the remaining cards and put it in the middle of the table.
# Make room for a discard pile.
# Every player makes room in front of them for a '''collection''' of 6 cards.

== Goal of the game ==

To be the first player to collect cards with a total value of 21 points.

== Gameplay ==

Play in turns. When it is your turn, you first choose to either '''TAKE''' or '''PASS''' :

==== TAKE ====

'''Play 1 to 6 cards from your hand''' with a total value of 6 or less. Put them on the discard pile. Now take cards from the central row on the table in your hands.

• If you played a '''single card''', you may take all sets of 2 or more cards with the same total value as the card you played.

''Example: you play a 6 from your hand and now take back a pair of 3s, and a 2+4 set from the table. You leave a 1+5 set on the table, even though you were allowed to take it.''

''Note: every card in the row on the table can only be part of 1 set.''

• If you played '''2 or more cards''', you may take all single cards with the same value as the total value of the cards you played.

''Example: play a 1, a 2, and a 3 and take all three 6s from the table.''

==== PASS ====

'''Add 1 card from your hand''' face up to the row on the table, draw 2 cards from the draw pile, and put them in your hand.

==== ADDING TO COLLECTION ====

You may optionally '''move 1 card from your hand to your collection''', for scoring. To do this, you must take '''all cards of the same value''' from your hand, with a minimum amount equal to the value of the card. Add one of them to your collection and discard the other cards.

'''In other words''': to add a 5 to your collection, you need to have at least five 5s. But for a 2 you only need two 2s.

''Example: you take all four 4s from your hand, put one 4 in your collection and discard the remaining 4s. You now have no more 4s in your hand.''

''Note: you can have only 6 cards in your collection. If you still want to add a card to your collection, you will have to remove one card from your collection first, and put it on the discard pile.''

==== FINALLY ====

• '''Refill the central row''' to 6 face up cards with cards from the draw pile.

• When there are '''10 cards in the central row''', discard all cards and put 6 new face up cards on the table.

• If your '''hand is empty''', all players have to discard the cards they hold in their hands. Deal every player a hand of 6 new cards.

''Note: if the draw pile is empty, shuffle the discard pile and form a new pile.''

Now it is the next player’s turn.

== End of the game ==

You win as soon as you have a collection with a total value of at least 21 (for instance, a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6). The game ends immediately.

General tips and statistics.

For the top half, the 35pt bonus is really important. To earn that, you need at least 3 of a kind for 1 through 6, for a total of 63.

For the bottom half, Three/Four of a Kind and Chance, you want to score better than the average of 5 dice, which is anything over 17 total.

As for the Full House and Straights, fish for those early and use the failed attempts to fill in your top half.

For serious players, there is [http://www-set.win.tue.nl/~wstomv/misc/yahtzee/osyp.php an online application] that allows you to compare your moves with those of a computer playing optimally (i.e. making plays that are most likely to score you the highest overall, in the largest number of possible scenarios). Try using it and see if you can improve your thinking.

[http://www-set.win.tue.nl/~wstomv/misc/yahtzee/yptd.php Another app on that same website] lets you play through an entire game of Yahtzee and get all of it analyzed afterwards. Here are [http://www-set.win.tue.nl/~wstomv/misc/yahtzee/instr-ptd.html the instructions on how to read the analysis].

The game of Yahtzee will challenge the player to choose between chasing similar dice to score the grand prize ( ‘Yahtzee’ is ‘five-of-a-kind’ ) versus a straight where any duplicates are re-rolled to chase the straight. To get Yahtzee means you’ll always need to chase duplicate dice at the expense of a straight. This ‘Yahtzee 1st and foremost’ strategy dictates that you only chase a straight when you get an inside straight (four die, 2,3,4,5) on your initial roll, otherwise you re-roll any dice not duplicated to score a ‘Yahtzee’.

The Yahtzee variant ‘Yams’ introduces an alternative scoring sheet with a few changes. For instance it drops the ‘chance’, ‘three-a-kind', and adds a ‘Rigole’ which is four-of-a-kind plus one from the opposite die face (1 for sixes, 2 for fives, 3 for fours, etc).

== Game Overview ==

==== Turn Order ====
# The First Player rolls the dice.
# They choose and remove one die and write the number into one of the valid boxes for any sport.
# The player on their right chooses a die from the remaining dice and writes the number into one of the valid boxes for any sport.
#This is repeated until the first player chooses a second die.
# The player on the right of the first player becomes the first player for the next round.
If a player cannot write a number on their game sheet, they must pass and the game is now over for them.

==== Coaches ====
Each player has 3 coaches which they can use before they choose a die.

# Re-Roll - This re-rolls all the dice that are left in the dice pool.
# Flip a Die - This changes the selected die to the number on the opposite side (eg from a 6 to 1).
# Add 1 to a Die - This increases the selected die's value by 1.

==== Game End ====
Once all players have passed the game is over and medals are then awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each sport. Each medal is worth Victory Points (gold is 5 points, silver is 3 points and bronze is 1 point). The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

'''(Quick Mode Option)'''

If Quick Mode is activated when the table is created, the turn order is handled differently. Quick Mode means that every player rolls 6 dice and chooses one from these dice. They then pass the remaining dice to next player. This will be repeated to the end of available dice, then every player rolls again. This will be repeated 7 times, then the game is over.

== Sports Overview ==

==== Sport Climbing ====
Sport Climbing is a race to the top. On their turn players may cross off the lowest number on the climbing wall. The first player to cross off the 6 is the winner. If the game ends with nobody reaching the top, whoever made it the furthest wins.

==== Golf ====
In Golf players must complete the course using the fewest dice. To complete a hole the sum of the dice used must add up to greater than or equal to the number in the flag. Holes must be completed in order. The winner is whoever finished the course with the least amount of dice used. In case of a tie, lowest sum of dice wins.

In the case no player finished the course, the player with more holes completed is considered the winner.

==== Rowing ====
In rowing, each rowboat must have a matching pair (top and bottom). Players must also complete the first boat before filling in the next boat. At the end of the game the highest total from completed boats wins. In case of a tie, the least boats used wins.

==== Hurdles ====
In Hurdles the sheet must be filled from left to right. Any dice over hurdles must be greater than 3. The course must be filled to score. Lowest total sum wins.

==== Skateboarding ====
Skateboarding is made up of 3 different tricks. You may begin filling in any trick you wish and they don't need to be completely filled to score. Highest total wins.

<u>Kickflip</u> - Muiltply both numbers.

<u>Frontside 5-0 Grind</u> - Numbers must be in consecutive descending order (e.g. 5 - 4 - 3) Starting from the left.

<u>Handplant</u> - All numbers must be equal.

==== Triple Jump ====
In the Triple Jump, players start by filling in the first 3 numbers. These must be in consecutive ascending order (e.g. 4 - 5 - 6). The following numbers must be equal.

Score by mulitplying the 3rd box (x) by number of equal dice. In case of a tie, highest number in equal box wins. It is not required to completely fill all boxes to score.
