If there are no Point Tokens left, there is no point in making that number. One useful strategy to empty the Point Tokens from a mountain if the other player doesn't have one. This will block them from getting Bonus Tokens, or at least restrict the amount they can get.
Once all the bonus tiles are gone, or three mountain point piles run out, the game finishes. '''This can happen rather suddenly!'''

== Overview ==
* Nine Men's Morris is an abstract board game for two players.
* Players attempt to remove their opponents' stones, and the first player to completely deprive the opponent of stones wins the game.

== Start of the game ==
* The board has 24 spaces, arranged in three squares.
* Each player begins with 9 stones of their colour in their reserve.

== Player's turn ==
* On a player's turn, a player either places one of their stones onto the board if there's any left, or otherwise moves one of their stones on the board.
* If a player moves a stone, that stone must be moved to an adjacent space.
** ''See 'final three stones' below for possible exception.''
* If by placing or moving this stone, the player forms a line of three of their stones, they have formed a "mill" and may remove any of their opponent's stones on the board.
* If it's possible, a player must remove a stone that is not a part of a mill, but if it's not possible, the player may remove any stone.
* Final three stones:
** According to the chosen rule option, the last three stones must move to adjacent spaces, or
*** ''default for 'simple' games''
** may move anywhere, not necessarily to an adjacent space.
*** ''default for 'arena' games''
** This option can be changed by clicking the cog-wheel preferences icon next to the game picture on the 'Play now' page.

== End of the game ==
* The game ends if a player cannot make a legal move; ''that player loses instantly''.
* The game also ends if a player is reduced to two stones. ''That player loses'' because they cannot make any more mills, and so those stones will eventually be captured by the opponent, leaving no stones and thus no legal move to make.

== General Tips ==
You draw 1 additional card per round for each of your species, so try to have more than one species in play. Too many species are a liability though, since they might become easy prey for your opponent's carnivores. Having 3 species is often a sweet spot.

If you have a carnivore, it has to have higher body-size to attack another species (exception is pack hunting). Since increasing body-size is an expensive investment, the top priority for your carnivore should be to avoid extinction. Hurting your opponent's species is secondary.

Carnivores are not inherently better than herbivores, it all depends on the current environment, e.g. how much food is in the pond, how many defenseless species are on the board, etc..
There is a rock paper scissors dynamic for play styles: defense > carnivore > greedy herbivore > defense

Don't spend all your cards each turn, it is often better to save cards until they become more useful or needed. One specific trait played at the right time can make the difference of a huge carnivore dying of starvation or instead destroying an opponents board.

== Card Tier List ==
Most cards are very situational, nonetheless here is a very rough tier list:

S: Cooperation

A: Warning Call, Fertile, Horns

B: Intelligence, Climbing, Carnivore, Scavenger, Ambush, Pack-Hunting, Symbiosis

C: Hard Shell, Burrowing, Fat Tissue, Long Neck

D: Defensive Herding, Foraging

== 2-Player VS. 3+ Player Games ==
2-player games are very different from 3+:

-In 2-player, the game is zero-sum and hence carnivores with intelligence are really strong (since discarding a card is no problem for attacking since your only opponent also lose one population which is also worth a card)

-For 3+ players, scoring tends to be more important than hurting one of your opponents.

Get rid of very low and very high cards first.

If the lowest of the last cards in a row is high, pick a card below it but as high as possible.

Always consider the possibility that someone picks a card that is lower than the lowest of the last cards. What row will they pick?

If you get 3 or more of the cards in the 100s and high 90s, don't play the highest first. If you are lucky enough you might be able to "lock" one row for yourself; use it when you need to escape a tough choice.

If you must take rows, try to do so when it's cheap.

Remember, you still have to take a pile '''and all its bullheads''' if you play a card too low for any rows. It's not a way to wiggle out of the consequences of a bad pile at the last moment. However, it can be used to take a row early if you believe it will cost you more bullheads later if it fills up. Or, it can be done if you're cornered and have to take a costly pile anyway, but you also need to play a very low value card. Finally, it can be used to set up a "trap" of sorts, but it comes at a cost to you, so make sure to balance the cost and benefit of this action and ensure they will actually fall for it.

Whenever you're considering which card to play, remember that it might be better to go for a known loss, than for an unknown one (i.e.: if you either risk to take 2 points, or to take whatever sum will come on that line - go for the what you know already).

Tag365: /* On Your Turn */ Should have said this to be explicit about losing points - I didn't know this and thought I could safely take away rows without taking bullheads.

[[Category:Card games]]

==Objective==
The basic goal of the game is to avoid having to pick up cards, and try to force the other players to do so. Everyone starts with 66 points - you lose one for each "bullhead" on a card you have to pick up. When one player has lost all of their points, the game will end at the end of the current round and the player with the most points left wins!

==On Your Turn==
* Everyone starts a round with 10 cards in their hand. Four cards are placed on the table to start four rows.
* Every player secretly chooses a card, and then all of the cards are revealed at the same time.
* When the cards are revealed, they are placed on the ends of the rows, from lowest value played to highest, following two rules:
# Cards are always placed in ascending order.
# Cards are always placed next to the card on the board with the smallest difference between them.
* As play progresses, the rows will fill up with cards - at five cards, a row is full.
* If someone's card would go onto a full row (is the sixth card), that player has to pick up all of the cards in that row, and they lose as many points as there are "bullheads" on the cards (different cards are worth different amounts - see below). The card that the person played becomes the starting point of a new row.
* If someone plays a card that is lower than the numbers at the end of all of the rows, then that player must take a row of their choice, losing points as normal, and start a new row in its place with their card.

==Bullheads==
* Each card from 1 to 104 has a number of bullheads on it - this indicates how many points it is worth when it is picked up.
* Cards which end in the number 5 (ex. 5, 15, 25) are worth 2 points.
* Cards which end in the number 0 (10, 20, 30) are worth 3 points.
* Cards which are multiples of 11 (11, 22, 33) are worth 5 points.
* The 55 card ends in 5 and is a multiple of 11, so it is worth 7 points.
* All other cards are worth 1 point.

==End of a round==
* The round ends when all 10 cards have been played from players' hands. If no-one has lost all of their points, then a new round begins.
* If someone is out of points, then the game is over and whoever still has the most points is the winner.

==Variants==
===Tactics===
* This ruleset changes the number of cards in play (based on how many people are playing) - other than that the rules are the same.
* The number of cards is equal to 10 times the number of players plus 4 (5 players = cards 1 to 54, 6 players = cards 1 to 64, etc.)
* Therefore, every card that could be played will find its way onto the table at some point.
* This changes the strategy and makes paying attention to which cards are yet to be played more important.

===Logic===
* Apply the same rules as Tactics, with these additional rules.
* At the start of the round all of the cards are placed on the table face up
* Players take turns choosing cards one at a time to build their hands before the round properly starts.

===Professional===
* Cards are played to the left OR the right, depending on which is closest in numerical value.
* The card that the person played becomes the starting point of a new row.

Remember, you still have to take a pile and all its bullheads if you deploy a card too low for any rows.

Whenever you're considering which card to play, remember that it might be better to go for a known loss, than for an unknown one (i.e.: if you either risk to take 2 points, or to take whatever sum will come on that line - go for the what you know already).
