Elongo is a competitive tile-laying and area majority game with the goal of placing all of a player's animals (zebu, goats, and sheep) into grazing fields and enclosures tended by Maasai warriors and boys. Players use shields (tiles) to expand, enclose, and claim land, construct bomas (fenced enclosures), frustrate opponents plans, and strategically place their animals and caretakers. The game ends when a player places all their animals, or shields run out and animals placed are compared to decide the winner.

Core Objectives

•	Place all assigned animals (zebu, sheep, goats) into valid grazing areas on the board.
•	Control grazing fields using warriors (for zebu) and boys (for sheep/goats) and construct secure bomas for permanent animal placement.

Setup

•	Each player receives a set number of animals (20 each of zebu, goats, and sheep in long game; 14 each in short game), 4 warriors, 7 boys, and 13 shields per round (8 wide, 5 narrow).
•	Three shields form a central hexagon to start; players may claim land patches using warriors or boys in this phase.

Game Flow

•	Players take turns, each laying 2 shields per turn and optionally placing warriors/boys on newly laid shields.
•	Shields expand the playing area, joining fence foundations to create contiguous land parcels and potential enclosures.
•	Players optionally claim land and complete enclosures or build bomas with warriors; animals are placed as enclosures and bomas are completed.
•	Players may remove warriors/boys already on the playing area if they are not being optimally used, although animals they are guarding are also removed.
•	The stock of shields is replenished back to 13 when all players are down to one, warriors building bomas are returned to stock to be reutilised, leaving animals in the bomas safe.

Land Types & Control

•	Red land is for zebu (claimed by warriors).
•	Green land is for sheep (claimed by boys).
•	Yellow land is for goats (claimed by boys).
•	Enclosures are made by completely surrounding land patches of one colour; bomas are fenced enclosures where animals are protected without needing indefinite caretaking.

Key Actions

•	Lay shields to expand/surround land parcels and/or build boma fences.
•	Lay shields to frustrate opponent’s possibilities to complete land enclosures
•	Steal opponents land parcels by joining claimed parcels and reclaiming them
•	Place, move, or remove warriors/boys and animals as land is claimed and enclosures and bomas are created.

Endgame & Scoring

•	The winner is the player who places all their animals first.
•	If not all animals are placed by the end, the player with the most zebu placed wins; ties are broken by total sheep and goats placed.

Robert44444uk: Hints and tips for the 42-animal (short) game

Here are some hints and tips to help players with the 42-animal short game:

Completing land enclosures

When claiming a parcel of land, try to place your warrior or boy on the central portion of the shield rather than either of the two sides. That is because the sides of the shields often end up in bomas, and then you will be forced to take your warrior or boy back

Only one boy or warrior can be on one land parcel. Stealing the other player’s parcels of land is not that hard, just claim a parcel of the same colour that can be joined to the other player’s parcel with one further shield to make a large parcel. Both men (yours and your opponents) will be taken off and that now gives you the chance to claim the larger parcel.

If your opponent has claimed a large land parcel then it is sometimes possible to block it from ever being completed by laying one or more shields that mean the opponent cannot lay a shield to enclose it. It takes practice to spot these opportunities, but they are easier to see when there is an area of play where the shields can be laid in an area that looks concave.

Count the number of shields that you have to lay to enclose a land parcel that you control. Try to make sure that the total is no more than three or preferably less.

If you lay a shield but decide that was not quite what you want to achieve, it is easy to press on any shield of the same shape (i.e. wide or narrow) in your stock to see if that produces a better result rather than immediately remove the shield and start again. If none of the combinations produce what you want, then you can remove it and try something else.

Try to make sure green and yellow land enclosures completed early in the game have at least 4 animals in them. You have only 7 boys and 28 animals to place. Do the math!

Bear in mind that there are less red patches than green or yellow and only 4 warriors to claim them, and that the warriors can also build bomas. Hence a warrior guarding an enclosure of 3 or fewer zebu created early in the game is not likely to be efficient.

Having said that, it is probably worthwhile trying to construct a red land enclosure with space for at least 5 zebu as relying on warriors to build only bomas is unlikely to allow you to place all 14 of your zebu given that most games are complete in two rounds. If you completed eight 3-animal bomas in those two rounds, that is only 24 animals placed out of 42.

Be very careful when building larger land parcels, as they can become quite hard to complete, and they can easily be stolen or blocked. A large land parcel is one that already has space for 6 animals.

Sometimes it helps to place one of your own shields to extend your opponent’s land parcel, if it means that the opponent needs to place more shields to enclose it than they did before you laid the shield.

Bomas

It is very easy to complete bomas, normally with two shields, but sometimes with one. Good play suggests that you should aim to complete at least three bomas per round.

For obvious reasons, it is invariably better to complete a boma that will shelter 5 animals that one that shelters 4, and better one that shelters 4 than one that shelters 3.

Keep an eye on the animals that you still need to place when completing bomas, as they are very handy if you have say, just one or two left to place, as you can normally make sure the colour of the land patches in the boma correspond exactly to the correct number of animals you still need to place

If you have no warriors left in a round, you can still complete the boma shape to stop your opponent completing it on their next turn.

Keep an eye out for super-bomas. These are bomas that surround other bomas. Completing one usually gives you a chance to lay up to 10 animals or more.

You can easily frustrate an opponent’s chances to complete them by laying a shield that makes such shapes harder to achieve (need more shields to complete).

If you spot a super-boma opportunity take it! Invariably, it is a game-winning move.

It is possible to create mega-bomas that surround super-bomas and although these are rare it is worth keeping an eye out for the opportunities.

If you can see it takes three shields to create the super-boma, then make sure you do not lay a shield or two shields as this will allow the opponent to complete it on their next turn. Better to wait to see if the opponent lays a shield in the area as then you can pounce on the opportunity.

Robert44444uk: Bronze Round Strategies - 2 player Game

Here are some strategies in the Bronze round 2-player game:

On the first turn, matching numbers on both link lays will score 4 points. This might come in handy later.

Try not to create a 3-link bracelets-in-assembly in the early stages of play unless you are sure that the opposition cannot immediately lay two links to complete the bracelet.

If possible, try not to let an opponent dominate a bracelet – that means ensuring you add one link at least to any bracelet-in-assembly. Conversely prioritise bracelets that you dominate, which might force the opponent to add a link to break the domination.

Keep a very close eye on the bronze links to come – this will help you to decide on which links to play that will ensure the bracelet-in-assembly remains incomplete at the end of the bronze round.

Don’t waste M links in the bronze round as they can link to the otherwise difficult black 5s and 8s. M links that complete a bracelet will incur a penalty.

Be canny with 7’s as they can only join 7’s. Overall in the standard game, at least one bracelet with a 7 will not be completed. By placing one 7 in each bracelet rather than linking 7s you are increasing the chances of large bracelets staying incomplete.

Be sure to lay two links to complete a bracelet in the correct order to ensure that a link with one or two matching numbers is placed last, allowing the matching points to be collected.
Completed bracelets do not score highly in the Bronze round unless they contain precious jewels, so completing these should be a priority.

The player who starts the silver round might be able capitalise on large bracelets-in-assembly left after the bronze round. Hence it is worth keeping tabs on the bracelets completed to see who will start that round. This will vary according to the number of bracelets completed in the round. Each time a bracelet is completed a player has to start a new bracelet, which reduces the number of bronze links to come. There are 20 bronze links in the general stock at the start of the game. The maths says that player 1 will start if the number of bracelets completed is 0,2,4 in the round, and player 2 will start if the bracelets completed are 1 or 3.
