=== Playing a card ===
Players take turns playing a card into a habitat on their side of the board either face-up or face-down. They can only play cards in areas that are not full. An area is full when it has 3 cards.

When playing a card '''face up''', it must '''match suit''' with the area it is placed in. When playing a card '''face down''', it is '''not required to match suit'''. Players can only play a '''total of 3 face-down cards''' on their side of the board. After playing a card, the '''opponent must take the card on top of the area''' in which the card was just placed and add it to their hand. A new card is added to the area.
=== Compare Strenghts ===
After playing a card into an area, '''compare the strenghts'''. Players win an area by having the highest value of combined card value (only face-up cards) in that area. If so, move the '''claim token''' onto their side of the board. Otherwise, it stays where it is.

There are '''3 ways to end the game'''.

* If a player has '''all 5 claim tokens''' on their side of the board – '''they win''' the game immediately.

* If a player '''cannot play a card''' – '''they lose''' the game immediately.
* If the game ends by '''both sides becoming full''' – players now r'''eveal all their face-down cards''' and '''check their strenghts''' in each of the 5 areas. If the revealed card matches the suit it is added to the total value, if not its discarded. The claim token is moved to the side with the highest value. But if the '''value is double (or more)''' than their opponents, the area is lost and the other player geths the claim token instead. The player with the most claim tokens wins the game.

'''''Ocoee River''''' is an expansion for '''''Forest Shuffle: Smoky Mountains'''''

It includes '''57 new cards''', including: 8 trees, 12 rivers, split cards ''(18 top/bottom and 12 left/right)'', and 7 special caves.

The '''Shortleaf Pine''' introduces a new tree species and, with it, a new tree symbol.

=== Game Set Up ===

* The base game and expansion cards are shuffled together. Then, depending on the player count, a certain number of cards are returned to the box unseen:
** with 2 players 70 cards
** with 3 players 40 cards
** with 4 players 25 cards
** with 5 players 10 cards

* As is customary in the base game, all players receive a standard cave at the start of the game. In addition, the '''7 special caves''' are laid out above the clearing. Each cave shows a condition, an effect ''(instant or permanent)'' and an additional scoring value.

=== Game Flow ===
The rules of Forest Shuffle: Smoky Mountains also apply to this expansion. There is a rule adjustment due to the new cave cards.

'''Exactly once''' during the game, you may '''choose a special''' cave whose condition you fulfill and replace your standard cave with it, instead of performing your usual action ''(draw 2 cards or play 1 card)''. If the cave has an instant effect, it is carried out immediately; if it has a permanent effect, it is carried out whenever the condition is met. The additional score is taken into account during cave scoring.
You may take a special cave only once during the entire game; if you have already taken a cave, the other caves are no longer available to you.

===Overview===
In '''Forest Shuffle: Smoky Mountains''', you create a forest according to your own vision—will you focus on densely planted tree lines or varied river landscapes? Skillfully place animals and plants on trees and along rivers to earn the most points. Whether a mighty predator, a humble gatherer, or a water dweller, every creature has its own unique preferences.

===How does this game differ from Forest Shuffle?===
Forest Shuffle: Smoky Mountains is a standalone game in the Forest Shuffle universe. The following features are different from the base game:

•	'''River cards''' introduce a new card type to the game.

•	River cards are played horizontally as '''individual rivers''' or attached '''below a tree'''.

•	Some species can only live in water and must therefore be attached to river cards. They may not be attached to trees.

===Game Flow===
Choose one of two actions:

A) '''Draw 2 cards''': Either from the '''clearing''' or the '''deck'''; you may combine these as you wish. You may never have more than 10 cards in your hand.

B) '''Play 1 card''': Pay the '''cost''' by placing the corresponding number of cards from your hand into the clearing, and play a card from your hand into your forest. If applicable, carry out its '''effect''' or '''bonus'''.

===Trees and Rivers===
Trees always show exactly one species. When you play a tree, you can either place it '''separately''' in your forest '''<u>or'''</u> place another card from your hand face down as a '''universal river under this tree'''. Whenever you play a tree (with or without a universal river), you then reveal the top card of the deck and place it in the clearing. Trees, rivers, and trees with rivers have a different number of '''slots''' where '''split cards''' can be attached:

•	'''Trees without a river''' have four slots: one each at the top, bottom, left, and right.

•	'''Rivers''' also have four slots: two at the top and two at the bottom.

•	'''Trees with a river''' have five slots: one each at the top, left, and right, and two at the bottom.

===Animals and Plants===
The split cards show different animals and plants. When playing a split card, you must place it in an empty slot on the corresponding side of a tree or river in your forest. Some split cards show the '''water requirement''' below their cost.

•	Trees without a river only accept cards '''<u>without'''</u> water requirement.

•	Stand-alone rivers only accept cards '''<u>with'''</u> water requirement.

•	Trees with a river accept '''<u>any cards'''</u> (with or without water requirement) at the top and to the left and right. Below the river, however, you may place only cards '''<u>with'''</u> water requirement.

===Effects and Bonuses===
These are resolved after playing a card. First the effect, then the bonus.

•	'''Effects''' are activated whenever you pay for and play a card. '''Immediate effects''' are activated immediately after playing, and '''permanent effects''' are activated whenever their condition is met.

•	'''Bonuses''' are only activated if you pay for the card '''with matching cards'''. To do this, all cards you use to pay must show the same tree symbol as the card just played.

===Checking the Clearing===
If there are '''10 or more cards''' in the clearing at the end of your turn, the clearing is emptied (cards are removed from the game).

===Special Case===
If you are unable to perform either of the two actions, reveal your hand cards. Then place two of them into your cave and draw 2 new cards from the deck into your hand. This ends your turn.

===End of the Game===
As soon as the '''3rd Winter card''' is revealed from the deck, the game ends '''immediately'''.

Starting Caves:
5 Starting Caves are drafted at the beginning of the game, after you've drawn 6 cards to hand, but before the game starts.
Caves are drawn in counterclockwise order.
After everyone has chosen a cave, they perform their effects in counterclockwise order.
Then the game begins.
Bogs:
When a bog is played, place a card from the stack into the bog.
Bogs have 4 card slots: 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. They don't have slots to their left and right. Therefore, cards that are split left and right can never be played into a bog!
They either have permanent effects, or they're worth points at the end of the game.
The back of every card in play shows a universal bog, which you can play just like any other card. Like a bog, they have two card slots at the top and bottom.
Some card effects allow you to place a card as a bog: Just take the card and place it face down in your forest.
Some cards can only be placed in a bog.
New Icons:
There are 6 new tree icons.
There's a new species icon because we've introduced mice as a new species to the game.
