GJJGames: Added tips from the designer.

Here are some tips that may help you increase your Renown score.

1. '''Spend Provisions''' - Provisions are only useful if you spend them. Use them effectively to extend each sailing action as far as possible/practical. Use them to encounter sea monsters. You'll want to sail into port on fumes as often as possible, especially if you have at least one gold to Fill Your Hold.

2. '''Watch For the Fill Your Hold Bonus''' - Try not to waste this bonus. Remember, you earn your bonus after taking your action, so if you spend all your provisions while sailing through adventures that get you enough story points to Fill Your Hold, you haven't really spent any provisions! Likewise, if you Fill Your Hold just before entering a port you won't have to spend a Gold to Fill Your Hold. Exploring at an opportune time can Fill Your Hold, too. But it's also easy to waste a Fill Your Hold bonus, by earning it when your cargo hold is already full. Try to avoid this whenever possible!

3. '''Avoid the Open Ocean''' - Try not to end your turn in the open ocean, especially near a map edge. That will limit what you can do on your next turn since you'll only be able to sail. And if the wind isn't favorable, you may waste a whole turn moving just a space or two. Try to end your turn next to a shore so you have the option of exploring if the winds aren't helpful.

4. '''Explore in Harbors''' - If you are thinking of exploring, look for harbors, points, and bays where you can be adjacent to two or more shorelines at the same time. This will let you explore on multiple turns in a row, allowing you to build up provisions, gold, and story before sailing on.

5. '''Use Wind In Your Sails Wisely''' - It is very useful to have a couple of spaces of Wind In Your Sails movement at the end of the game. This can help you get to a port when you really need it. You'll be amazed at how often one or two spaces of free movement will get you just that little bit further so you can get to a port. Remember, you can use the Wind In Your Sails movement before or after your main action, so use them to sail through spaces that cost the most movement points. When you do use them in the middle of the game, use a few of them to move to a new location without using a sail action. Then you can explore or visit a port without spending a turn sailing there. It's like getting a free turn!

6. '''Stop in Port Often''' - Telling your story in port is what secures your renown. Every time you tell your story you are locking in points, so telling a lower value story more often can get you more overall renown than telling an amazing story a few times. Consider these two port visits, one captain telling a lower value story 6 times and one telling a higher value story only 4:

Port 1: 3 | 6

Port 2: 7 | 14

Port 3: 20 | 35

Port 4: 23 | 52

Port 5: 35 |

Port 6: 42 |

Final Story: 43 | 53

Total: 173 | 160

7. '''Place Adventures Where You'll Visit Them''' - Often new players treat the adventures as obstacles that must be avoided, but that's not the case! Adventures are how you build your story and ultimately earn reputation. So place adventures onto your map in places that you are pretty sure you'll be able to visit them. Near ports is useful because you can gain some valuable story points before telling your story at the port and securing renown. Or you'll be able to hit the adventures after leaving the port when your cargo hold is full. Regardless, don't avoid those adventures!

Hopefully these tips will help you increase your scores.
