This help page is incomplete and in progress.

Dead Cells is a co-op game for one to four people. The default for Board Game Arena is two players.

Each player is a person who has been beheaded. The goal is to make it from the prison to freedom through a number of biomes. Each biome contains a number of rooms and branching paths which are traversed from left to right. After each biome is an "interbiome" step where you can rest and heal up before moving on to the next map.

The game is not designed to be finished on the first pass. Each time your group fails, you become stronger for the next run. When you start a rematch with the same players, BGA automatically treats this as a continuation of your existing campaign and gives you access to cards and abilities that you unlocked previously. You may choose to play as different characters than your previous run.

==== '''Display''' ====
Click the (+) and (-) icons in the top right to zoom in and out on the game boards. Click the circles below those icons to see which cards are available in your player and equipment decks as well as rules references. (Biome-specific rules are found here, including rules for the final boss.)

<ul class="bulletlist" style="margin:1em 0;padding-inline-start:40px;">

<li>'''Biome board.''' This shows a structure with about 9 rooms. It must be traversed from left to right, with some choice as to which rooms are by-passed.</li>

<li>'''Annexe board.''' This holds the decks of cards as well as your accumulated resources (cells, teeth, and other loot).</li>

<li>'''Combat board.''' Up to four enemy cards are placed here during combat: three in front of the party and one behind.</li>

<li>'''Combat log.''' During combat, this area will summarize the actions available to each enemy and party member. Each round's actions appear on a single line and are carried out from left to right.</li>

<li>'''Player boards.''' Each player has four tracks representing their health and abilities. Each track has a marker with an arrow pointing left. This arrow indicates the current level of that track. (At the start of the game, each player has 3 hearts on the health track, 1 scroll on the green and purple ability tracks, and no scrolls on the red ability track.)</li>

<li>'''Mutation Board.''' This board shows the current level of the healer, merchant, and collector who allow you to purchase upgrades between biomes. You will also unlock permanent upgrades which can be placed here for later games.</li>

</ul>

At the bottom of the screen is your hand of up to three cards. If you place your cursor on the correct spot on a card, the cards will pop up where you can conveniently read them.

==== '''Moving and Interacting''' ====
All characters move together across the board, represented by the group token. The first player is responsible for advancing the token along the path. Most of the time there will only be one option to move forward, but sometimes you get to choose a route.

Click a space on the board with a glowing outline to flip over its token and reveal the encounter. The type of encounter (treasure chest, combat, etc) is pictured on the front of the token but you can also use the token's shape as a guide: circle (free resources), square (combat), beveled square (elite combat), pentagon (resources available for purchase), hexagon (usually beneficial but sometimes hazardous).

Sometimes there will be an icon between two encounters representing a type of check or challenge along the path. They come in different styles:

<ul class="bulletlist" style="margin:1em 0;padding-inline-start:40px;">

<li>A '''deck check''' requires the active player to flip the top card of their deck and inspect the symbols in the upper left, which might be green, purple, or red.</li>

<li>A '''hand check''' requires the active player to discard a card from their hand with a specific symbol in the upper left.</li>

<li>A '''rune''' requires that the party have unlocked a specific rune in order to travel along that path. Runes are permanent once acquired, expanding your options in later playthroughs.</li>

<li>Some biomes have '''special rules''' for checks that apply only to that board. Click the icon in the upper right of the display to expand a rules explanation.</li>

</ul>

==== '''Combat''' ====
When a combat tile is flipped over, it indicates the number of enemies to be added to the board of each type (normal and elite) as well as any loot that can be earned. It might also indicate that the first player token (the crown) should be rotated to the next player.

BGA will take care of placing enemies into the correct positions on the board. Then players play combat cards based on the number of players in the game:

<ul class="bulletlist" style="margin:1em 0;padding-inline-start:40px;">

<li>'''1 player:''' play two cards (see rulebook for instructions on solo play). Actions on the cards are resolved in the order that you play them, which sometimes ends up mattering a great deal.</li>

<li>'''2 players:''' the first player plays two cards as above. The other player plays one.</li>

<li>'''3 players:''' each player plays one card.<nowiki></li>

<li>'''4 players:''' one player is removed from combat and will not play cards, take damage, or receive items. The remaining players each play one card.</li>

</ul>

Once all players are ready, the combat log fills up with the actions from their cards as well as from the enemies on the board. BGA automatically advances through each combat step in order. (First the enemy positioned "behind" the party, then the players in turn order, then the rest of the enemies from left to right.) Effects like poison trigger at the end of a round, and then enemies move up to fill any gaps between them and the players. Note that bosses do '''not''' move up.

<nowiki><li></nowiki>'''3 players:''' each player plays one card.<nowiki></li></nowiki>

<nowiki><li></nowiki>'''4 players:''' one player is removed from combat and will not play cards, take damage, or receive items. The remaining players each play one card.<nowiki></li></nowiki>

<nowiki></ul></nowiki>

Once all players are ready, the combat log fills up with the actions from their cards as well as from the enemies on the board. BGA automatically advances through each combat step in order. (First the enemy positioned "behind" the party, then the players in turn order, then the rest of the enemies from left to right.) Effects like poison trigger at the end of a round, and then enemies move up to fill any gaps between them and the players. Note that bosses do '''not''' move up.

'''Display'''

Click the (+) and (-) icons in the top right to zoom in and out on the game boards. Click the circles below those icons to see which cards are available in your player and equipment decks as well as rules references. (Biome-specific rules are found here, including rules for the final boss.)

# '''Biome board.''' This shows a structure with about 9 rooms. It must be traversed from left to right, with some choice as to which rooms are by-passed.
# '''Annexe board.''' This holds the decks of cards as well as your accumulated resources (cells, teeth, and other loot).
# '''Combat board.''' Up to four enemy cards are placed here during combat: three in front of the party and one behind.
# '''Combat log.''' During combat, this area will summarize the actions available to each enemy and party member. Each round's actions appear on a single line and are carried out from left to right.
# '''Player boards.''' Each player has four tracks representing their health and abilities. Each track has a marker with an arrow pointing left. This arrow indicates the current level of that track. (At the start of the game, each player has 3 hearts on the health track, 1 scroll on the green and purple ability tracks, and no scrolls on the red ability track.)
# '''Mutation Board.''' This board shows the current level of the healer, merchant, and collector who allow you to purchase upgrades between biomes. You will also unlock permanent upgrades which can be placed here for later games.
At the bottom of the screen is your hand of up to three cards. If you place your cursor on the correct spot on a card, the cards will pop up where you can conveniently read them.

== Turn Structure ==
Each round of the game represents one generation of development and colonization on Mars. At the start of each round, the first player token moves to the next player.

In every generation players perform the following steps:

'''1) Research:''' draw four cards and add any number of them into your hand. Pay 3 M€ for each one added and discard the rest. There is no hand limit.

'''2) Actions:''' take 1-2 actions from the list below or pass. If you pass, you will not play again for the rest of the round. Continue in turn order until all players have passed.

'''3) Production:''' first convert all unspent energy into heat, then all players simultaneously produce resources and M€ according to their production values. Players also get M€ equal to their Terraform Rating. (Note that M€ production values may be negative.)

=== Actions ===
1) Play a card from your hand

2) Use a standard project

3) Claim a milestone

4) Fund an award

5) Use an action on a blue card (each blue card may be used once per generation)

6) Convert 8 plants into a greenery tile (increasing the oxygen level and your Terraform Rating)

7) Convert 8 heat into a temperature increase (increasing your Terraform Rating)

==== Playing Cards ====
Some cards have requirements in order to play them, such as:

- Global parameters (oceans, oxygen, temperature) must be above or below a certain level

- You must have enough tags of a given type already in play (like Science)

- You must be able to produce a specific resource (like Titanium)

Cards have a base cost which must be paid in M€. This cost can be reduced by other card effects. You can also spend resources in lieu of M€ if the card has certain tags:

'''1 Steel = 2 M€''' to pay for any '''Building''' card (brown building icon)

'''1 Titanium = 3 M€''' to pay for any '''Space''' card (gold sunburst icon)

Carry out all of the card's effects, gain resources, and increase/decrease production values as directed. If a change to a production value is indicated with a red border, you can choose to apply it to another player or to no one at all. (These are usually negative effects.)

After you play the card, it moves to one of three areas on your board depending on their color. You can change how these areas are arranged by clicking on the "three bars" icon in the header.

'''- Red cards''' have no further effects and are automatically hidden. They do not contribute tags to your overall totals but may be worth points at the end of the game.

'''- Green cards''' have no further effects, but remain in play to contribute their tags. They may be worth points at the end of the game.

'''- Blue cards''' have either an ongoing passive effect or an action you can take on your turn. BGA sorts them into two piles for your convenience.

==== Standard Projects ====
You always have the following options on your turn regardless of what's in your hand or on your board. Don't forget them! Each standard project takes one action on your turn.

Note that you can also raise temperature or place greenery by spending heat or plants instead of M€.

'''Sell patents:''' discard any number of cards and gain that many M€.

'''Power plant (11 M€):''' increase Energy production one step.

'''Asteroid (14 M€):''' increase temperature one step (and gain one TR).

'''Aquifer (18 M€):''' place an ocean tile (and gain one TR). Note that oceans don't belong to the player who placed them, unlike other tiles.

'''Greenery (23 M€):''' place a greenery tile (raising the oxygen level and gaining one TR). If possible you must place it next to a tile you already own.

'''City (25 M€):''' place a city tile and gain one M€ production. Cities may not be placed adjacent to each other. (Exception: Noctis City may be placed into its reserved spot even if there is already an adjacent city there.)

If you place a tile, remember to gain any placement bonuses depicted in the space you cover up!

==== Milestones and Awards ====
Milestones and awards place you in direct competition with other players. With milestones you race to be the first to meet a certain condition; with awards you compete to have the most in a specific category at the end of the game.

===== '''Milestones''' =====
As an action, you may pay 8 M€ and claim a '''milestone''' if you meet its requirements. It is worth 5 VP at the end of the game. Only three milestones may be claimed per game.

* '''Terraformer:''' have 35+ Terraform Rating (TR)
* '''Mayor:''' own 3+ cities
* '''Gardener:''' own 3+ greenery tiles
* '''Builder:''' have 8+ building tags in play
* '''Planner:''' have 16+ cards currently in hand

===== Awards =====
As an action, you may pay some amount of M€ and fund an '''award'''. The first award funded costs 8 M€, the next costs 14 M€, and the last costs 20 M€. Only three awards may be funded per game. At the end of the game, check each funded award. The first and second place player in each category score VP (see Game End section). The player who funded the award receives no special consideration.

* '''Landlord:''' most tiles in play of any type(s)
* '''Banker:''' highest M€ production
* '''Scientist:''' most science tags in play
* '''Thermalist:''' most unspent heat resource cubes
* '''Miner:''' most unspent steel and titanium resource cubes (combined)

== Game End ==
Game ends when there is enough oxygen to breathe (14%), oceans enough to allow Earth-like weather (9 aquifers), and the temperature is well above freezing (+8˚C).

The winner is the player with most VPs at the end of the game. VPs come from:

* '''Terraform Rating (TR).''' Each time you raise a global parameter (oceans, oxygen, temperature) your TR increases. Score VPs equal to your TR at the end of the game.
* '''Greenery.''' Score 1 VP for each greenery tile you own.
* '''Cities.''' Score 1 VP for each greenery tile adjacent to a city you own, regardless of who owns the greenery. The capital city card also scores 1 VP for each adjacent ocean.
* '''Awards (must be funded).''' 5 VPs to the winner, 2 VPs to second place. If players tie for first, they all get the bonus and no second place is awarded. If multiple players tie for second, they all get the bonus. In a two player game, no second place is awarded.
* '''Claimed milestones.''' Each claimed milestone is worth 5 VPs at the end of the game. Only 3 of the 5 milestones may be claimed.
* '''VPs on played cards.''' First, count all VPs on cards that collect resources. Then gather all of your remaining cards (including all your played events!) and count your VPs. If you have Jovian cards, these may have to be counted separately. (To identify this look for the number, or an effect like X VP / Y number of resources, marked inside the planet Mars Icon)

== Limitations of digital adaptation ==

* Cannot choose order of come into play effects of project cards (with some exceptions)
* When order of effect choosen - cannot Draw cards before resolving other complex effects
* Cannot undo single action (Undo will undo 2 actions or until after last Draw)

'''Greenery (23 M€):''' place a greenery tile (raising the oxygen level and gaining one TR). If possible you must place it next to a tile you already own.

'''City (25 M€):''' place a city tile and gain one M€ production. Cities may not be placed adjacent to each other. (Exception: Noctis City may be placed into its reserved spot even if there is already an adjacent city there.)

If you place a tile, remember to gain any placement bonuses depicted in the space you cover up!

==== Milestones and Awards ====
Milestones and awards place you in direct competition with other players. With milestones you race to be the first to meet a certain condition; with awards you compete to have the most in a specific category at the end of the game.

===== '''Milestones''' =====
As an action, you may pay 8 M€ and claim a '''milestone''' if you meet its requirements. It is worth 5 VP at the end of the game. Only three milestones may be claimed per game.

* '''Terraformer:''' have 35+ Terraform Rating (TR)
* '''Mayor:''' own 3+ cities
* '''Gardener:''' own 3+ greenery tiles
* '''Builder:''' have 8+ building tags in play
* '''Planner:''' have 16+ cards currently in hand

===== Awards =====

* '''Banker:''' highest M€ production
* '''Scientist:''' most science tags in play
* '''Thermalist:''' most unspent heat resource cubes
* '''Miner:''' most unspent steel and titanium resource cubes (combined)

== Game End ==

== Turn Structure ==
Each round of the game represents one generation of development and colonization on Mars. At the start of each round, the first player token moves to the next player.

In every generation players perform the following steps:

# Research: draw four cards and add any number of them into your hand. Pay 3 M€ for each one added and discard the rest. There is no hand limit.
# Actions: take 1-2 actions or pass. If you pass, you will not play again for the rest of the round. Continue in turn order until all players have passed.
## Play a card from your hand
## Use a standard project
## Claim a milestone
## Fund an award
## Use an action on a blue card (each blue card may be used once per generation)
## Convert 8 plants into a greenery tile (increasing the oxygen level and your Terraform Rating)
## Convert 8 heat into a temperature increase (increasing your Terraform Rating)
# Production: first convert all unspent energy into heat, then all players simultaneously produce resources and M€ according to their production values. Players also get M€ equal to their Terraform Rating. (Note that M€ production values may be negative.)

=== Playing Cards ===
Some cards have requirements in order to play them, such as:

* Global parameters (oceans, oxygen, temperature) must be above or below a certain level
* You must have enough tags of a given type already in play (like Science)
* You must be able to produce a specific resource (like Titanium)

Cards have a base cost which must be paid in M€. This cost can be reduced by other card effects. You can also spend resources in lieu of M€ if the card has certain tags:

* 1 Steel = 2 M€ to pay for any Building card (brown building icon)
* 1 Titanium = 3 M€ to pay for any Space card (gold sunburst icon)

Carry out all of the card's effects, gain resources, and increase/decrease production values as directed. If a change to a production value is indicated with a red border, you can choose to apply it to another player or to no one at all. (These are usually negative effects.)

After you play the card, it moves to one of three areas on your board depending on their color. You can change how these areas are arranged by clicking on the "three bars" icon in the header.

* Red cards (events) have no further effects and are automatically hidden. They do not contribute tags to your overall totals but may be worth points at the end of the game.
* Green cards (automated cards) have no further effects, but remain in play to contribute their tags. They may be worth points at the end of the game.
* Blue cards (active cards) have either an ongoing passive effect or an action you can take on your turn. BGA sorts them into two piles for your convenience.

=== Standard Projects ===
You always have the following options on your turn regardless of what's in your hand or on your board. Don't forget them! Each standard project takes one action on your turn.

Note that you can also raise temperature or place greenery by spending heat or plants instead of M€.

# Sell patents: discard any number of cards and gain that many M€.
# Power plant: pay 11 M€ and increase Energy production one step.
# Asteroid: pay 14 M€ and increase temperature one step (and gain one TR).
# Aquifer: pay 18 M€ and place an ocean tile (and gain one TR).
# Greenery: pay 23 M€ and place a greenery tile (raising the oxygen level and gaining one TR). If possible you must place it next to a tile you already own.
# City: pay 25 M€ and place a city tile; also gain one M€ production. Cities may not be placed adjacent to each other. (Exception: Noctis City may be placed into its reserved spot even if there is already an adjacent city there.)

If you place a tile, remember to gain any placement bonuses depicted in the space you cover up!

The travelers score additional points depending on their ranking as donors to the Temple:
* The most generous donor scores 10 points.
* The second scores 7 points.
* The third scores 4 points.
* All other donors score 2 points.

In the event of a tie, all tied players score points from that rank; e.g., two players tied for first place score 10 points each.

Award the following achievement cards to the appropriate travelers. Each achievement card is worth 3 points. If players are tied for an achievement, then they each receive the 3 points.
* Gourmet - the player with the highest sum of coins on their Meal cards.
* Collector - the player with the most Souvenir cards.
* Bather - the player with the most Hot Spring cards.
* Chatterbox - the player with the most Encounter cards.

Note: There are 3 other achievement cards that are awarded during game play. One for each different type of panorama and each is awarded to the player that is first to complete the specific panorama.

Note: If players are tied after the final scoring, then the player with the most achievement cards wins.
