Try to have the strongest dragons in the home areas.

=== Playing a card ===
Players take turns playing a card into a habitat on their side of the board either face-up or face-down. They can only play cards in areas that are not full. An area is full when it has 3 cards.

When playing a card '''face up''', it must '''match suit''' with the area it is placed in. When playing a card '''face down''', it is '''not required to match suit'''. Players can only play a '''total of 3 face-down cards''' on their side of the board. After playing a card, the '''opponent must take the card on top of the area''' in which the card was just placed and add it to their hand. A new card is added to the area.

=== Compare Strenghts ===
After playing a card into an area, '''compare the strenghts'''. Players win an area by having the highest value of combined card value (only face-up cards) in that area. If so, move the '''claim token''' onto their side of the board. Otherwise, it stays where it is.

=== Game end ===
There are '''3 ways to end the game'''.

* If a player has '''all 5 claim tokens''' on their side of the board – '''they win''' the game immediately.

* If a player '''cannot play a card''' – '''they lose''' the game immediately.
* If the game ends by '''both sides becoming full''' – players now r'''eveal all their face-down cards''' and '''check their strenghts''' in each of the 5 areas. If the revealed card matches the suit it is added to the total value, if not its discarded. The claim token is moved to the side with the highest value. But if the '''value is double (or more)''' than their opponents, the area is lost and the other player gets the claim token instead. The player with the most claim tokens wins the game.

== Overview ==
The game plays over a series of turns, until the game end is triggered in one of three ways.

* If an HQ is captured by a Troop, the capturing player immediately wins.
* If through region control a player gains a certain number of medals as defined by the map, that player immediately wins.
* If a player cannot perform any more actions (e.g. they have no tiles to draw and cannot play any tiles), then the game ends. In this case, the player with the most medals wins. In the case of a tie, the player who triggered this end game condition loses.

Each player has 24 troops--8 types with 3 of each. During set up, 4 troops are randomly removed from each player's reserve without the players knowing which tiles are removed. The removed tiles are likely different between the two players, creating a mysterious asymmetry.

'''Draw 2 Troops''' from your reserve and place them on your rack. Your rack can hold up to 8 Troops maximum
or

'''Play 1 troop''' from your rack onto a space on the battlefield. You can place it anywhere that fulfills the following conditions:

An empty base that is connected to your HQ (this means you must always follow a continuous path from your HQ (starting point) to the troop you are placing, passing only through bases you occupy)

A base occupied by any of your troops

A base occupied by an enemy troop with a lower strength than your troop

Your opponent's HQ. (You cannot place a troop on your own HQ)

Each troop has an effect that triggers after placement.

If the troop was placed on a special base, you first fully complete the troop's effect before trigger the effect of the special base.

If you control a region by occupying all the bases surrounding it, you claim any and all medal(s) currently in that area.
If you would draw a 9th troop, you simply do not draw the troop.

INTRODUCTION Tanbo (Japanese for "rice paddy") is played on a grid of size 7x7,
11x11, 15x15... Or 5x7, 7x9, 9x11, 11x13... The board is initially populated with black
and white stones, thoroughly interspersed, with one empty point (intersection) between
stones, as shown in Figure 1. Mark Steere designed Tanbo in 1993, and updated it with a
denser starting position in April, 2026.
PLAY The two players, Black and White, take turns placing stones of their own color
onto unoccupied points on the board, one stone per turn, starting with Black. You must
place your stone orthogonally (horizontally or vertically) adjacent to exactly one of your
on-board stones. [All relevant adjacencies here are orthogonal.] In Figure 2, Black can
place a stone on any of the points marked with a green dot.
ROOTS A "root" is root-like, monocolored group, which could be a single stone. The
game begins with a fixed number of roots. Roots cannot merge together, and new roots
cannot be created. The "current root" is the root which you enlarged during your current
turn.
BOUNDED ROOT A root is “bounded” if it’s so tightly surrounded that it doesn’t
have room to grow. There are no legal placements available that would enlarge the root.
[More technically, there is no unoccupied point which is adjacent to exactly one stone in a
bounded root and which is not adjacent to any other stones of the bounded root's color.]
CURRENT ROOT CAPTURE If your placement has bounded your current root,
you must immediately remove your current root from the board, concluding your turn.
In Figure 3, Black has placed the stone marked with a green dot, bounding his current
root. He must immediately remove his current root - that is, all of the stones marked with
red or green dots - concluding his turn.
NON-CURRENT ROOTS CAPTURE If your placement has not bounded your
current root, but has bounded other roots, of either or both colors, you must
immediately remove all of the roots that were so bounded, concluding your turn. In
Figure 4, Black has placed the stone marked with a green dot. His current root was not
bounded, but other roots were bounded. Black must immediately remove all of the roots
that were bounded - that is, all of the stones marked with red dots - concluding his turn.
OBJECT OF THE GAME The goal is to annihilate your opponent. When all of the
roots of one color have been removed, the player of the other color wins. You can win on
either player's turn.
DESIGN NOTES Tanbo was the second game I ever designed, back in 1993. It
originally had a much sparser initial position, having only 16 stones on a size 19 board.
Now in 2026, I'm re-releasing Tanbo, with a much denser initial position, but otherwise
exactly the same rules. This creates more fluid, less stilted gameplay. Tanbo is a classic.
It's been bastardized, butchered, and debased. But never equaled.
AUTHOR’S NOTE Feel free to publish this rule sheet, and to program the game of
Tanbo. No licensing fee or royalties are expected. However please don’t change the name
or the rules, and please attribute the game to me, Mark Steere. My other games can be
found at marksteeregames.com.

When the game begins, 3 goal cards will be revealed, each player is dealt a hand of 3 mushroom cards and must place their first seedling in one of the central 4 slots starting with the first player. If there are unclaimed slots, those are filled with place holders and cannot be played on.

===Placing First Seedling Strategy===
The two factors that can impact your decision are the mushrooms in your hand and to a lesser extent, the goal cards.

If there is a mushroom you want to play that takes an certain color of activation token, it is advantageous to place your first seedling next to starting mushrooms that refreshes that color of token. Additionally it is generally good practice to have access to a variety of different colored mushrooms to ensure you are able to effectively use your activation tokens, though exceptions exist.

==Playing the Game==

===Turn Actions===
On each player's turn, that player may choose to do one of the following:
*Activation:
*Absorb:
*Reproduce:
==Scoring and Goals==
Your goal is to collect the most growth points.

===End of Game Scoring===
Each player scores points from the following:
*
The player with the most growth points win.

==Strategy==

===3 Trees===
In order to end the game, a player must absorb at least one carbon on 9 separate turns. An aggressive strategy which ends the game in the fewest possible turns and seedlings will result in the player growing 3 trees and solely absorbing their carbon via the Absorb action.
