== Overview ==

* Papayoo is a trick-taking game with ''five'' suits:
* The object of the game is to take ''as few points as possible.''
* Therefore, the player whose score is closest to 0 will be the winner.
== Game play ==

# Deal all of the cards.
#* ''{{spade|1|color=#c80}}{{heart|1|color=#c00}}{{club|1|color=#0a0}}{{diamond|1|color=#c0c}} are removed for 7-8 players.''
# '''[[#Cards_distribution|Depending on the number of players]]''', choose 3-5 cards to pass face-down to the player to your left.
#* This must be done before you look at any cards passed to you.
# Once all players have passed cards, an eight-sided die is rolled.
#* Whichever side lands face up determines which {{card|7}} card is worth points in that round.
#* For example, if {{spade|color=#c80}} is rolled, the {{spade|7|color=#c80}} is worth 40 points.
# The dealer plays first, with any card from their hand.
# In clockwise rotation, each player plays a card.
#* Suit must be followed where possible.
#* There is ''no'' trump suit; the highest card in the led suit wins the trick.
# Whoever takes the trick leads the next trick.

* The number of rounds is determined before the game.
* Points are accumulated throughout the game.
* The total number of points in the round should equal to 250.

Fermentacious: /* Tips */

== Tips ==
• Look for opportunities to swap passengers with other players. It's often more efficient to transfer a passenger instead of delivering it to the final destination yourself, especially as the distance increases. Communicate with your teammates and watch for times when several players can meet at the same airport to conduct layovers (DEN has the most connections and is centrally located, so it often work well). Try to coordinate so you can deliver multiple passengers to one location, or along the route.

• Stay near your special routes. It's much more efficient for the green ATL player to move passengers between ORD - ATL (3 moves via the special route) compared with another player doing the same journey (6 moves via ORD - JFK - ATL, 7 moves via ORD - DEN - ATL, etc.). If the green player is on the other side of the board, it means nobody is using the shortcut and it will take another player at least twice as long to move that same passenger. Try not to end up in a dead-end, when you use a common route but end up in a location where you don't have the connecting route and have to backtrack to leave - that can use up multiple turns.

• Avoid flying an empty plane. After you deliver a passenger and there are others waiting, see if it makes sense to load any passengers and carry them to your next airport (even if it's not their final destination). It can sometimes be beneficial to carry a passenger in the wrong direction if that allows you to transfer the passenger to another player who also has empty seats, or if the passenger is nearing 4 anger (since moving them will reset the anger to 0).

• Hold passengers between rounds to avoid anger. If you end your turn at an airport with waiting passengers, load them into your plane, even if you will be flying in a different direction during the next round. You can deplane these passengers at the start of your next turn before moving.

• When purchasing, prefer speed/seat upgrades over alliances. Speed is generally more flexible than an additional alliance and gives additional movement every turn for the remainder of the game. Although a well-timed alliance purchase can be incredibly helpful, you might never need that alliance again (especially if another player already owns the alliance).

== 🧩 Too hard? Make the game easier ==
• Play without time pressure. There's a game option to double or disable the timer.

• Play with fewer players. The map is smaller for 2 - 3 players, and the general pace of the game is slower because fewer new passengers arrive each round. Coordination and communication also become much easier with just 1 or 2 other people.

• Play with both starting upgrades. There's a game option to start your plane with both a seat and a speed upgrade, making everything easier right from the start.

• [https://boardgamearena.com/gameinprogress?game=1842&all Watch a real-time game] of knowledgeable players. See how they discuss strategy and how they transfer/deliver passengers.

== 🍰 Too easy? Increase the difficulty ==
• Play with a larger map. There's a game option to add JFK, SEA airports even when playing with 2 - 3 players.

• Play with VIPs. You can choose the normal VIPs (from the physical board game) and/or the BGA Community VIPs (which are generally more challenging).

• Play with even more VIPs. There's a game option to have increased or doubled number of VIPs.

• Add self-imposed restrictions ("nobody can buy the ORD alliance this game").

Fermentacious: /* Selecting Trump and Partner */

==The Cards==

There are 5 suits with 12 cards each: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9.

The number of triangles on each card shows how many points it is worth when you win the card in a trick (0, 1 or 2).

The 60 total cards are dealt out evenly to all the players.

==The Bidding==

Players bid to become Chief or Vice. You can think of these as the head of two teams. They will be the ones to decide trump.

When it is their turn, players can bid by taking one or more cards from their hand and placing them upright in front of them for everyone to see '''OR''' the player can pass. If a player passes on one turn, they can still bid if it comes back to them. Bidding ends when all players have passed consecutively. Cards used during the bidding phase remain visible to other players but are still considered part of the hand during play.

Chief is determined by the player who has the greatest number of cards showing. As the bidding goes around, players can only raise one card more than whatever player currently has the most cards showing. For example, if the tentative chief has 2 cards showing, other players cannot show more than 3 cards. Once a player has 3 cards showing, another player may show 4 cards. A player may pass multiple times and then put down any number of cards in one turn, as long as it doesn't break the previously stated rule. If the bidding ends with a tie for Chief, then the hand is not played; and there are negative points for the challenger and positive points for any others that are tied for Chief.

Vice is the person with the second most number of cards showing (Chief being the person with the largest number of cards showing). However, a tie is decided differently. If there is a tie in the number of cards for Vice, then the position goes to the person who has the highest number on their card. If there is still a tie, then the next highest card is compared. If there is still a tie for Vice when all showing cards are compared, then there is no Vice trump.

==Selecting Trump and Partner==

After the Bidding phase, the Vice selects the Vice Trump. Then the Chief selects the Chief Trump. Finally, the Chief selects their partner.

In a five player game, there are two people on the Chief team and three people on the Vice team. Five player games are considered the best because - in four player, it would be two against two giving a strong advantage to the Chief's team - or in six player, two chief players and four vice players makes it much harder for the Chief's team. There is an option in the game setup for six people, where the dealer doesn't play thus enabling five players to play the hand even when there are six people included in the game.

==Tricks==

Cards that are trump (as nominated by the Chief and Vice) form a single '''trump suit''', with the Chief's trump higher than the Vice's trump. Cards that belong to both the Chief's and Vice's trump are the highest cards in the trump suit (the double trumps).

''For example, the Vice nominates red cards as trump and the Chief nominates 7s. The trump suit will be the red 7s as the highest cards (double trumps), followed by the 7s in other colors (they no longer belong to the suits of their respective colors), followed by the remaining red cards from highest to lowest.

* After the first card is played in a trick you must play a card of the same suit if you can ('''follow suit''').
* If a trump card is the first card played you must play any trump card if you can.
* The highest card of the color led wins the trick, unless a trump card was played - in which case the highest trump card wins.
* If multiple cards of the same rank are played the '''first equal card wins'''

==Scoring==

First, each player scores the points on the tricks that they won individually.

The chief's team then add their scores together and compare it to the bid to calculate the team bonus.

If the chief's team '''made their bid''', they get bonus points as shown on the table (based on how many cards were in trump).

If the chief's team '''failed their bid''', the points are:
* The chief loses -10 points for the number of cards overbid
* The chief's partner does not gain or lose any bonus points
* Everyone not on the chief's team gains 5 points for the number of cards overbid

==Selecting Trump and Partner==

There is an option in the game setup for six people, where the dealer doesn't play thus enabling five players to play even when there are six people included in the game.

==Tricks==

==Scoring==

==Tricks==

==Scoring==

==The Bidding==

Players bid to become Chief or Vice. You can think of these as the head of two teams. They will be the ones to decide trump.

When it is their turn, players can bid by placing one or more cards from their hand upright in front of them '''OR''' the player can pass.

If the bidding ends with a tie for Chief, then the hand is not played; and there are negative points for the challenger and positive points for any others that are tied.

Vice is the person with the most cards (excluding Chief). It is also based on the number of cards, but a tie is decided differently. If there is a tie in the number of cards for Vice, then the position goes to the person who has the highest number on their card. If there is still a tie, then the next highest card is compared. If there is still a tie for Vice when all showing cards are compared, then there is no Vice trump.

==The Cards==

==The Bidding==

Players bid to become Chief or Vice. You can think of these as the head of two teams. They will be the ones to decide trump.

When it is their turn, players can bid by placing one or more cards from their hand upright in front of them or the player can pass.

However, a player may pass multiple times and then put down any number of cards in one turn, as long as it doesn't break the previously stated rule.

==Selecting Trump and Partner==

After the Bidding phase, the Vice selects the Vice Trump. Then the Chief selects the Chief Trump. Finally, the Chief selects their partner.
In a five player game, there are two people on the Chief team and 3 people on the Vice team. Five player games are considered the best because - in four player, it would be two against two giving a strong advantage to the Chief's team - or in six player, four against two makes it much harder for the Chief's team. There is an option in the game setup for 6 people, where the dealer doesn't play thus enabling a five players to play even when there are six people included in the game.

==Tricks==

==Scoring==

First, each player scores the points on the tricks that they won individually.

The chief's team then add their scores together and compare it to the bid to calculate the team bonus.
