The Action Cards

There are 5 different action card piles that each have a general theme. Know the general theme of each action card stack and how to counter those effects:

  1. 1 - Intrigue - These cards allow you to move Caballeros already on the map.
    • Successfully counter these cards by placing enough Caballeros on the map that your opponent's options for manipulating your control are limited.
  2. 2 - These cards are a mix, the VETOs live here, along with 3 cards the score one region only, and cards that return Caballeros in the Courts to the Province.
    • Successfully counter these cards by placing Caballeros on the map - Caballeros on the map are not in your Court and can potentially be included in a scoring card.
  3. 3 - Scoring - These cards all provide scoring opportunities outside the normal end of 3/6/9 round structure.
    • Successfully counter these cards by placing Caballeros on the map - only Caballeros on the map can potentially be included in a scoring card.
  4. 4 - Another mix, the mobile score boards live here which allows a points rich region to turn into a measly 4-pointer or a lowly 4-pointer to transform into a grand 8-pointer.
    • Successfully counter these cards by placing Caballeros on the map - the more regions you have Caballeros invested in a level of 1st or 2nd place control the less potential for mobile scoreboards to negatively impact your expected points totals.
  5. 5 - The King's Card - This card is offered every round and it's a doozy. Placing 5 Caballeros from your Court is fantastic on its own but then also moving the king lets you dictate what regions can be most impacted by other people AND which region is the King's region and therefore taboo, untouchable from any non-scoring effect.
    • Successfully counter these cards by placing Caballeros on the map - control regions adjacent to the King, control regions away from the King, control the King's region if you can manage it.

Area Control games such as El Grande are sometimes also known as "dudes on a map" games - it is imperative to put your dudes on the map.
